THE CRISIS OF THE FAMILY UPBRINGING AND MEDIA

Maja Ljubetić ; Filozofski fakultet u Splitu

Sažetak

The media have far reaching consequences on children’s development and also threaten parents' influence on the upbringing of their children. In the aim of determining parental viewpoints on the media, and their influence on children as well as the habits of early aged and pre-school children, research was carried out on a sample of 105 parents of pre-school children. For the needs of the pilot research, a Child and Media Questionnaire (CMD) was constructed. The area which described the child-parent relationship with the media was researched using exploratory factor analysis. Two factors were extracted. The matrix correlation of the questioned variables showed the connection between the ages of the parents with the children’s' frequency of watching television and playing video games. The formal education of the parents did not correlate with any one questionnaire variable. The results of hierarchical regressional analysis revealed that: older children, a smaller number of children in the family and a lower level of formal education among parents significantly contributed to the relation between the child and the media; TV is the most frequent interest of children; parents better assessed which media contents were of an educational nature for girls than for boys: that parents are most sensitive about video games than about other forms of media and hold a clear viewpoint about the positive/negative effects. Parents extent tried to limit their children being exposed to the media but, these efforts nevertheless were insufficient.
