Marulić's Assumption in the Art of Translation and his Translated Version of a Poetical Text of his own

Sažetak
It is well known that around 1510-1511 Marko Marulić translated into Latin the celebrated Petrarchan canzone Vergine bella. This verse translation was ac-companied by an epistle to his friend Jerolim Papalić, in which he commented on his own work as a translator. The writer of this paper analyses Marulić’s translator’s notes, and reveals in them a closeness with the celebrated statements of Dante in Convivio, I, 7. Whether or not Marulić’s observations are a derivation of Dante’s Convivio or the result of independent thinking, this text is not only the first Croatian reflection about the problems of translating, but is quite early in the wider European context: it precedes, for example, the famed postulates of Luther (Sendbrief vom Dolmetschen, 1530).
In the second half of the paper, the writer analyses Marulić’s procedure in translating his own poem from Latin into Croatian. This refers to the Carmen de doctrina Domini nostri Iesu Christi pendentis in cruce, in which Marulić trans-lated his Latin elegiac couplets into Croatian double rhymed dodecasyllabics.
