Gábor Baross (Pružina, 6 June 1848 – Budapest, 8 May 1892) was a prominent Hungarian politician in the times of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. He was the representative of the Illava-Pučo District at the Hungarian Parliament (1875); State Secretary in the Hungarian Ministry of Traffic and Public Works (1882); Hungarian Minister of Traffic and Public Works (1886) / of Trade (1890); Minister of Religious Aff airs and Education (1888, one month); Minister of Internal Affairs (1889, three months). He was known for his exceptional work, potential, energetic nature and ambition. His name is usually associated with the nationalisation of Hungarian railways; the tariff zones reform; the modernisation of road traffi c; the establishment of postal savings- bank; the development of specialist training; traffi c regulation on lower Danube; the development of Hungarian shipping industry by a signifi cant enlargement of the Rijeka harbour; etc. He lived for the defence of Hungarian national economic interests; taking into consideration the fact that he was active from the time when the Croatian- Hungarian Settlement was concluded (1868) onwards, such standpoint exercised a negative impact on Croatia of those times. He is therefore often referred to in a negative context in Croatian literature.
