The essay discusses the influences of Marulić‚s Croatian verse on the work of the renown contemporary Croatian poet from Split, Tonči Petrasov Marović (1934-1991).
Marulić‚s poem Judith (1501) influenced Croatian poetry, particularly in the 16th century. The great Renaissance poet was also read in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century it seemed that he would be remembered as the founder of national literature and a patriot, rather than as a living poetic presence. Yet, at the start of this century the writers of the Croatian Modernism did not see him as a “museum piece”, but listened to its ancient word with new sensibility. Several Modernists witness to this new interest for Marulić, among others, Tin Ujević in his famous sonnet Oproštaj (Farewell).
It is on more than one level that Tonči Petrasov Marović makes Marulić‚s heritage his own. In his works Marulić‚s presence may be identified in quotations, allusions and paraphrases of single lines, as well as in the use of his archaic versification and old chakavian words. Writing in the depressing atmosphere of the 1970s, when Croatian national spirit was choked everywhere, on political and cultural levels, Marović found com-fort and inspiration in his remote ancestor. The well-known Marović‚s songs and poems Pjesma od spolia (The Song Made of Relics), Suprotiva (Against), Hembra appeared in those years. Marović opens a dialogue with Ujević‚s sonnet, as well. This complex poetic interaction may be represented in the formula: MARULIĆ - UJEVIĆ - MAROVIĆ - MARULIĆ.
Tonči Petrasov Marović wrote two essays on Marulić: Nazočniji Marulić ili klasik ukratko (A Stronger Presence of Marulić or a Classic in Short) in 1972, and Judita tečevina zavijek (Judith, the Legacy for All Times) in 1988. Also, he dedicated to Marulić his poetic short story Noć za Marulića (A Night for Marulić) in 1980.
