Sažetak

The Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925 was the first significant opportunity for the new country of the Kingdom SHS to present a complete quality production of applied arts from all its political segments – Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. There were
just three month available for preparation work, the organization was in the hands of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the only selector was Tomislav Krizman who was also in charge of the setting up of the exhibition inside the National Pavilion of the
Kingdom of SHS. Metalwork in the Croatian section was represented by Ivo Kerdić, Hinko Juhn, Otti Berger, Radka Sagara, Ada Nedvecka, M. Rački i Baldazar Besediček. The most important exhibitor was Ivo Kerdić, professor at Art Academy, medal maker and engraver who exhibited several works from bronze and beaten copper, such as the bronze chandelier »The Drunkard« in a typical art-deco stylization, the »Memory Book of Croatian Kingdom, « an icon made of silvered beaten copper, etc. Next, there was Hinko Juhn whose exhibited works displayed a rare sculptural quality also in contemporary style. Some authors exhibited only one piece, e-g., Otti Berger, then a student of the Academy, who later worked
in textile only, and M. Rački. Some completely forgotten artists were exhibited, too, such as Ratka Sagara (apparently from Zagreb, but there is no documentation about her), and
Baldasar Besediček whose works often appeared along with Kerdić’s bronzes and Krizman’s painted pottery in the journals of the time. From archive data we learn that Besediček was a
first generation pupil of Kerdić, and an apprentice in the Academy’s Foundry while Kerdic was in charge, and that he left for the U.S. as a young man, probably in 1927. Although rarely mentioned, his works are of very high quality of international art-deco, being among the finest examples of Croatian metalwork at the exhibition. The study has been conducted using the surviving objects in the collection of the Museum of Arts and Craft in Zagreb,
archival information, and the existing original photographs of the 1925 exhibition.
