Noise exposure among young croatians - habits, attitudes, risk awareness, protection and early consequences

This study examined the relationship between exposure to noise, incidence of hearing problems, attitudes towards noise, socioeconomic status, possible negative auditory experiences and the use of hearing protection among young people. A questionnaire was developed and administered to 279 young people from an urban area in Croatia, aged 14;01-18;09 years (mean age 15;22, SD=1, 29). Data concerning exposure to noise, familiarity and experience with the symptoms of hearing problems, attitudes about loud music and its impact on hearing, knowledge and attitudes about prevention, and experience with personal hearing protection were analyzed using correlation analysis and chi-square test, analysis of variance, t-test, and Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Among survey participants, frequent and extensive use of personal listening devices was reported, with one third of participants also reporting experience with temporary auditory and non-auditory reactions to noise. Participants were found to hold some information about hearing loss and the impact of noise on hearing, but generally do not experience these risks on a personal level and do not use hearing protection measures. Approximately half of participants reported a wish to know more about the impact of loud music on hearing. Analysis further indicates that those who are concerned about their hearing are more likely to exhibit preventive behavior, which suggests that the education of young individuals about the impact of noise on hearing is a good prevention strategy.
