Sažetak

This study examines the possibility of defining the first phase of the artistic activity of Niccolo di Giovanni de Firenze, a sculptor often mentioned as involved in various undertakings in Dalmatia since 1467, and whose hand has been recognized in many works between 1470 and 1505. An occasion for this is a new realization that the head of a small statue at the chapel of St. Peter in Vrboska on the island of Hvar is in fact a replica of an original broken when the statue fell out of its facade niche, a copy which modified the proportions of the work and used a style of carving different from that of the body. By an extensive analysis the author seeks to prove that the original statue could be attributed only to Niccolo who, at the ti me of the restoration of the chapel, was indeed on the island. Comparing the St. Peter to Niccolo's other works, the author proposes a firmer definition of Niccolo's beginnings, dating them even a few years prior to the appearance of the first written documents concerning the sculptor in Trogir. He also criticizes as too bold linking another small statue, of St. Stephen at Sumpetar poljički with a loosely defined »workshop of Aleši — Firentinac.« The author
believes that the quality of the statue is such that it could not be linked even to anonymous disciples or helpers of the two most important sculptor of the Quattrocento on the Croatian coast. And at the same time, the author pleads for a more precise definition of the style of Andrija Aleši, a local artist inferior to the talented Tuscan sculptor, and used by the latter as a spring board for entering the Dalmatian market. As an initial step in that process, Niccolo made a series of small sculptures, which could be even sold in a free market, the two
stylistically very typical works mentioned here included. Sculptors of that quality were not available in Dalmatia at that time, and the new additional data could be used to paint a more complete picture and to arrive at a more comprehensive evaluation of Niccolo's beginnings in Dalmatia.
