Sažetak

The colour of the sporulating and sometimes of the vegetative mycelium of the streptomycetes is a feature extensively used for taxonomical purposes. The description of colour is a very subjective process. In this work the agreement between individual investigators in three different laboratories was compared. All groups of investigators received the prepared spore suspension of 11 different streptomycetes strains from one investigator. The spore suspensions were streaked on plates with six different media and the colours were observed after 5, 10 and 10 days of incubation at 28 C. The colours were compared with the colour table of Bondarcev or recorded by a number for every colour series (1—6 for aerial mycelium and 1—10 for vegetative mycelium). The agreement was poor to good depending on the culture strain, the medium and the age of the culture. Better agreement was achieved in colour description of aerial mycelium than of vegetative mycelium. The best agreement was achieved after 15 days and the best medium was Gauze’s organic nitrogen substrate. The agreement was better when the colours were compared with the colour table. The results for two media are set out in tables. The introduction of a uniform descriptive colour terminology and the use of appropriate colour wheels, as proposed by Tresner and Backus, would be useful in categorizing streptomycetes in different colour series.
