Comparative Measurements of Respiration Rate of Green Leaves and Petáis in some Plant Species

Sažetak
The respiratory activity of leaves and petals of twenty sistematically different plants has been comparatively measured by means of Alvik’s colorimetric method. The rate of respiration has been expressed in mg. CO2 per g. of dry weight per hour.
The results (see Table I) show that the respiration rate of petals, has been in all investigated plants higher than the respiration rate of their green leaves. The comparison of data obtained with leaves shows further that the rate of respiration of leaves is considerably smaller in xerophytes than in mesophytes and hydrophytes.
According to the results of measurements, organs with higher respiratory activity contain in general also a higher water content. It seems therefore very probable that the water content is one of the most important factors which cause the observed differences in respiratory activity of petals and leaves.
