Forty years of Plant Virus Research in Botanical Institute of Zagreb University

Plant virus research started in Croatia fifty years ago. The founder of that work was dr. Milan Panjan (1906-1981) who in 1943 published the first report on plant viruses (Kohler and Panjan 1943). After that M. Panjan continues to investigate plant viruses in the Institute for Plant Protection in Zagreb. Ten years later dr. Davor Miličić (1915-1993) began to study plant viruses in Botanical institute of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb as well. In 1954. he published his first article concerning plant viruses (Milicic 1954). Step by step professor Miličić formed the modern plant virus laboratory in Botanical institute. In addition he has composed the research group which was consisted of four younger researchers. Leader of this research team was D. Miličić almost for forty years. He and his coworkers have maintained close connections with numerous plant virus laboratories in the world (Table 1) specializing in some of them. The main directions of research work of this group were : identification of plant viruses occurring in Croatia (Table 2), virus cell inclusions, serological relationship among viruses, molecular properties of viruses and plant virus contamination of soil and water. The members of the group have published about 350 scientific papers in relevant journals. Professor Miličić’s group has certainly earned the reputation of being one of the esteemed plant virus groups in Europe. Unfortunately, today the work of this group is stagnant because of faint financial support and deficiency of laboratory equipment. In addition, today in the group there is only one younger researcher, while the rest four researchers are in front of pension. However, hoping the situation will be better because Croatian government will be soon in position to support more than up to now important research programs and scientific disciplines.
