Sažetak

The Straub family of sculptors is among the most interesting phenomena of the 18c Baroque sculpture in Central Europe. Five sons from the numerous family of the sculptor and the Carpenter Johann Georg Straub from Wiesensteig in Württemberg were trained sculptors. The eldest of them, John the Baptist Straub, became the leading Baroque sculptor of his time in Munich, Philip Jacob and Joseph enjoyed the same status in Graz and Maribor respectively, while the two youngest brothers ventured farther southeast: John George to Radgona, Francis Anthony to Zagreb. With the exception of John George, whose work had not become clearly defined. they had all exerted a considarable influence on the Baroque sculpture of southwestem Croatia, both indirectly (e.g. John the Baptist's pulpit for the church of "Black Spaniards" in Vienna had served as the model for the church of Our Lady of the Snows at Belac) and directly (Philip Jacob's and Joseph Straub's altars made for our churches). The youngest brother, Francis Straub, spent ten years in Zagreb, on Kaptol, but aside from scanty personal information, the sources do not reveal anything about the works he had made in this period, which mainly covers the 1770's. Taking as a starting point striking stylistic and typological traits of his older brothers' works in Graz and Maribor, where he had recived his training, according to the stylistic-critical method used, the oeuvre comprising a number of altars and several pulpits in different churches of northwestern Croatia is ascribed to Francis Straub. The whole oeuvre testifies to the sculptor's wide range of capabilities regarding both form and expression, in the best tradition of Central Europe. and therefore belongs to the best works of Croatian Baroque sculpture from the second half of the 18c.
