Croatian Glagolitic version of the Testament of Abraham (2): the synoptic study of the manuscripts and the comparison with the Greek text

An apocryphal story titled Testament of Abraham, containing a mysterio us tale about the last day of Abraham’s life, is in the focus of this article’s research. Besides being present in Greek, Coptic, Arab, Ethiopian and Romanian manuscripts, the same tale is also found in various Slavic manuscripts including five Croatian Glagolitic miscellanies, dating from 15th to 17th century, not all of them being presently wholly critically evaluated. For that reason is made a synoptic study of the complete apocryph texts from the Oxford Miscellany and the Siena Miscellany first, and then of the incomplete apocryph texts from the Petris Miscellany, the Tkon Miscellany and the Berčić Collection nr. 5, compared with the oldest text from the Oxford Miscellany. In the synopsis, accordances and divergences between different texts are graphically annotated and then explained, therefore concluding that the text from the Tkon Miscellany and the Berčić Collection is closer to the Oxford text, but there are also similarities between the texts from the Petris Miscellany and the Oxford Miscellany. In continuation is given the comparison between the text from the Oxford Miscellany and the text of the Greek short recension edited by F. Schmidt in his critical Greek edition of the Testament of Abraham in 1986. It is pointed out that, according to its textual and linguistic characteristics, the Croatian Glagolitic version very faithfully reproduces the Greek text, occasionally even ad litteram, and that the major divergences consist in abbreviation and simplification of the original text. However, some textual divergences indicate that the Croatian Glagolitic apocryph text has originated from the earlier and nowadays unavailable Greek manuscript. For these reasons it may be concluded that the Croatian Glagolitic version offers an important contribute to the investigation of the original text of the Testament of Abraham.
