Sažetak
The importance of knowledge-based economies in economic development has been widely recognized, and it is of significant relevance especially to countries of Central and Eastern Europe and their growth, which highly depends on the generation and utilization of knowledge as they are trying to catch up developed EU economies. The book The Knowledge-based Economy in Central and Eastern Europe: Countries and Industries in a Process of Change, first published 2006 by Palgrave Macmillan, analyses the growth in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) from a knowledge-based economy (KBE) perspective. The content of the book is divided in four main parts divided according to the issues discussed in each chapter: The Knowledge-based Economy in Historical, Growth and Theoretical Perspective, Dimension of Transformation Towards a Knowledge-based Economy, Transformation Towards a Knowledge-based Economy: Country Assessments, Supporting Transformation Towards a Knowledge-based Economy: Policy issues. Besides the introductory chapter written by editors, Slavo Radosevic and Krzysztof Piech, the book contains sixteen more chapters. The agenda for the book stems from the conference entitled The Knowledge-Based Economy in Central and East European Countries: Exploring the New Policy and Research Agenda which was held at University College London – School of Slavonic and East European Studies in April 2003. This book offers readers new empirical evidence on knowledge-based activities in the countries of CEE at sector and policy levels, and it is the first such issue of KBE in this region. The book may be very useful to researchers, policy-makers and to all those involved in development studies, international economics and economics in transition. The book is well founded since the main conclusions are backed up by the results of econometric analyses and is written in clear and easy to understand style.
