Sažetak

In the article data are presented gathered within a broader scientific research project «Possibilities of Improving Care for Children Removed from the Family» connected with social support of children placed in children's homes and foster families in the Republic of Croatia. The sample of examinees consists of 575 children 10-16 years of age, 263 of which are from children's homes, 112 from foster families, and 200 are children from the general population.
The results of research indicate that children placed in children's homes perceive less social support in comparison to children living in foster families and to children from the general population. As specific providers of social support children placed in children's homes and fostership most often mention their counselors or foster parents in almost the same ratio as children from the general population mention parents. Results related to contacts of children removed from their families with members of their primary social network clearly indicate the need to deal with this issue taking into account the child's developmental needs as well as the quality of attachment to the members of the primary network. Also, special attention should be given to the spreading of children's social networks in the broader environment (school, peers outside of the children's home and foster family, broader local community).
