SHORT-TERM ISOLATION OF THE ABUSER FROM THE FAMILY – YES OR NO?

Sažetak
The increasing awareness in society of family violence has literally catapulted the police into the arena of the protection of children and women from violent fathers and husbands. It is clear that society must do something to resolve the problem of family violence, but the question arises of the effectiveness of the available means of intervention. This work shows the results of some foreign studies which discuss the preventive effect of arrests and short-term imprisonment, but only for certain groups of perpetrators of family violence. Some empirical data are also presented that do not support the logic of the current police procedure in cases of family violence.
In the context of such knowledge, it does not seem purposeful, and in some cases it can even be counterproductive, to request the police to continue to initiate legal procedures against family abusers when we know that nothing will be done for their rehabilitation and that, in cases like these, they actually represent a new threat for their victims. The conclusion is drawn that temporary isolation can be the best momentary solution for both the victim and the abuser in cases of family violence, but that it would be unrealistic to expect any long-term preventive effects from such a measure.
