Sažetak

Aim: The aim of the research was to investigate possible correlations between minor
physical anomalies (MPAs) scores and clinical features of patients with schizophrenia: age at disease onset, duration of illness, and the severity of symptoms (evaluation of PANSS scores). Methods: We investigated 30 minor anomalies of the head and face in 40 patients and 46 non-psychiatric controls. Variables were grouped into seven head and face regions, and we calculated regional scores, as well as total MPA score for each individual. Results: Significant correlations were found between palatal score and PANSS general psychopathology
scale score (r=0,357; P<0,05). Significant correlations between eye score and all PANSS subscales’ scores, with exception of positive subscale score are doubtful, because eye score was also significantly related to age and illness duration. Sex was a significant predictor of nasal, tongue, ear, and MPA total scores where males generally had higher scores than females.
Age at disease onset did not affect MPA scores in our sample. We detected a tendency of association between palatal and MPA total score, and PANSS total score (rpalate= 0,267; Ppalate= 0,063; rtotal MPA score= 0,330; Ptotal MPA score= 0,085). Conclusions: The results suggested that patients with higher number of MPAs could be at risk to develop greater severity
of illness.
