Twenty years of the Polyclinic for Hemodialysis Interdial Opatija

Sažetak
Aim: The presentation of twenty years of uninterrupted work of the Polyclinic for
hemodialysis “Interdial” from 1990 to 2010. Methods: A retrospective analysis of data from
existing medical records. Results: A total of 114 patients treated since the beginning of Polyclinic
(1990) until today. The analysis did not revealed data from guest patients treated in
holiday dialysis. The first 10 years of continuous work the number of patients did not exceed
23. The upward trend in the number of patients continued in the last 10 years of work. The
maximum number of regular patients was of 47 in 2009. Today, Polyclinic has 44 permanent
patients. The average age of patients in the analyzed period was 60,74 years. In the period
from 1990 to 2000 year was 51,52 years and from 2000 until 2009 it was 62,72 years. The
treatment of renal anemia with erythropoesis stimulating agents (ESA) was not a regular
until 2000 when the first issued guidelines for treating anemia in dialysis patients were published
in Croatia and immediately applied in the Polyclinic. In the first 10 years, glomerulonephritis
and pyelonephritis were the leading cause of end-stage renal failure (ESRD), but
today, diabetes and vascular kidney diseases are predominant and it is associated with a
growing number of elderly people. Conclusion: There is a trend of increasing number of patients
treated with hemodialysis. The leading cause of ESRD today is diabetes. The average
age of patients on dialysis is increasing and the development of medicine and technology is
growing resulting with the better quality of life of patients on dialysis.
