heavy metals; electric arc furnace dust; hazardous waste
Within the scope of corporate waste management, Sisak Steelworks initiated a thorough and systematic examination of physical and chemical properties of metallurgical waste and of its behaviour in interaction with the environment.
Electric arc furnace (EAF) dust has been categorized as hazardous technological waste and it can not be directly disposed of to the ground / in a land fill. Therefore, it is necessary to find a way to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly and economically acceptable manner.
In order to elaborate different options and chose the optimal practice for the disposal of the accumulated volumes of hazardous metallurgical waste, comprehensive and systematic research has been conducted. This paper provides only a partial survey of the research of the heavy metal Zn, Pb, Cd content in electric arc furnace dust as well.
Qualitative chemical analysis of samples of electric arc furnace dust was conducted on all observed samples and the presence of Fe, Zn, Pb, Mn, Cu, Al, Ca, Mg, K, S, P, C, O and Cl was established.
The results of qualitative chemical analysis of monthly average samples of electric arc furnace dust obtained by other methods established that the mass fraction of iron was between 41.08 and 48.58 %, zinc between 3.75 and 8.10 %, lead between 0.94 and 2.07 %, and cadmium between 0.010 and 0.027 %. The results of the Zn, Pb, Cd fraction analysis in the observed samples of electric arc furnace dust are considerably lower, than the content of those metals in EAF dusts presented in the available references, where the mass fraction of zinc varies between 0.14 and 50 %, lead between 0.03 and 6.8 %, and cadmium between < 0.01 and 1.8 %.
Quantitative analysis of Fe, Zn, Pb and Cd fraction was carried out in grain-metrical fractions of individual samples of EAF dust as well. The results have shown that the concentrations of Fe tend to increase with smaller fraction grains compared to an average sample, whereas concentrations of Zn, Pb and Cd in the same proportion display a descending tendency.
Results of the Zn, Pb and Cd fraction analysis in the EAF dust samples from Sisak Steelworks compared to the mass fraction of those metals in EAF dust from other steel mills imply that the measured concentrations of zinc, lead, and cadmium are much higher. Therefore, it is not economically viable to recycle this dust for the lead, zinc or cadmium recovery.
Consequently, the disposal of this kind of hazardous metallurgical waste must first be handled in another, environmentally acceptable and economically justifiable way. Additional investigations must be carried out before the final decision is made.

Surveys: Crystallography, the Interdisciplinary Science of 21st Century: XX Congress of International Union of Crystallography, Florence 23-31. 08. 2005
i H. Krotoa.
(npr. nastajanje i struktura amiloidnih proteina, vezano uz Alzheimerovu bolest) te strukture i svojstva novih materijala (npr. dizajn Li-baterija, mikrostruktura materijala, nukleacija i rast zrna,

Inorganic Constituents in Coal
Anorganski sastojci u ugljenu
A. Rađenović
Coal; inorganic constituents; mineral matter; trace elements; methods of determination; utilization
ugljen; utjecaj na okoliš
Coal contains not only organic matter but also small amounts of inorganic constituents. More than one hundred different minerals and virtually every element in the periodic table have been found in coal. Commonly found group minerals in coal are: major (quartz, pyrite, clays and carbonates), minor, and trace minerals. Coal includes a lot of elements of low mass fraction of the order of w=0.01 or 0.001 %. They are trace elements connected with organic matter or minerals comprised in coal. The fractions of trace elements usually decrease when the rank of coal increases. Fractions of the inorganic elements are different, depending on the coal bed and basin. A variety of analytical methods and techniques can be used to determine the mass fractions, mode of occurrence, and distribution of organic constituents in coal. There are many different instrumental methods for analysis of coal and coal products but atomic absorption spectroscopy - AAS is the one most commonly used. Fraction and mode of occurrence are one of the main factors that have influence on transformation and separation of inorganic constituents during coal conversion.
Coal, as an important world energy source and component for non-fuels usage, will be continuously and widely used in the future due to its relatively abundant reserves. However, there is a conflict between the requirements for increased use of coal on the one hand and less pollution on the other. It's known that the environmental impacts, due to either coal mining or coal usage, can be: air, water and land pollution. Although, minor components, inorganic constituents can exert a significant influence on the economic value, utilization, and environmental impact

V. Jarm
kopolimere i nelinearne polimere.

Nomenklatura i terminologija polimera, VI.2 Nomenklatura pravilnih jednonitnih organskih polimera
V. Jarm
Organski polimeri; pravilni jednonitni; nomenklatura
Opisana je nomenklatura na osnovi strukture za
pravilne jednonitne organske polimere.
predstavlja kemijsku strukturu polimernog lanca, a A, B i C
utvrđuje preferentna PKJ, a onda imenuje uz upotrebu imena
podjedinica A, B i C prema važećoj nomenklaturi organske
kemije.
revidirana pravila publicirana 1975. godine.

Razvoj procesa izravne redukcije i redukcijskog taljenja za proizvodnju čelika
Development of Direct Reduction Process and Smelting Reduction Processes for the Steel Production
M. Gojić
S. Kožuh
čelik; ugljen; prirodni gas; redukcija; redukcijsko taljenje
Steel; direct reduction; smelting reduction; coal; natural gas
Although the blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace are going to be primary routes for steel production in future, the steelmaking industry using the electric arc furnace route will continue to grow. The importance of high-quality steel products manufactured by direct reduction of iron ore and/or by smelting reduction processes has been increasing. In the past decade the world steel production by direct reduction rose by 140 per cent, from about 20 to about 49.5 Mt/year. In this paper major industrial processes involving direct reduction and smelting reduction of iron ore are described, and their development is analysed.

The fidelity of translation is determined at two major points: the accuracy of aminoacyl-tRNA selection by the ribosomes and synthesis of cognate amino acid/tRNA pairs by aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) in the course of the aminoacylation reaction. The most important point in aminoacylation is the accurate recognition of cognate substrates coupled with discrimination of
non-cognates. While this is generally accomplished by a single enzyme, we have recently found that discrimination against lysine analogues requires the existence of two unrelated lysyl-tRNA synthetases. For other amino acids, initial recognition is not sufficiently accurate with errors being
corrected by an intrinsic editing activity. Recent studies indicate how editing prevents the misinterpretation of phenylalanine as tyrosine in the genetic code and have shown the importance of this process in vivo. More recent studies indicate that while these editing reactions are critical in
the cytoplasm, some are absent from mitochondria suggesting that the overall fidelity of protein synthesis might be reduced in this compartment.
Vjernost translacije bitno ovisi o točnosti dvaju koraka: odabiru aminoacil-tRNA na ribosomu i sintezi ispravnih aminoacil-tRNA pomoću odgovarajućih aminoacil-tRNA-sintetaza u reakciji aminoaciliranja.

Chemical Disarmament: Current Problems in Implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention
Kemijsko razoružanje: Aktualni problemi u provedbi Konvencije o kemijskom oružju
J. Matoušek
Chemical weapons (CW); Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC); Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW); 1st Review Conference; Scientific & technological development
kemijsko oružje; konvencija o kemijskom oružju
The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is briefly characterised by stressing its main pillars, such as verified destruction ofCWstockpiles and destruction/conversion ofCWproduction facilities (CWPFs), verified non-production of CW by the chemical industries, assistance and protection), and international cooperation. The CWC´s leading principle in defining theCW(protecting it generally against scientific and technological development, i. e. so called General Purpose Criterion) is thoroughly elucidated showing its relation to the CWC´s sophisticated verification system. Status of implementation (as of August 2005) shows main data obligatory declared by the States Parties (SP), among them 6 possessors of CW stockpiles (Russia, USA, India, South Korea, Albania and Libya). From the declared 71 373 agent-tons, 12 889 have been destroyed, from the declared 8 679 M items of munitions (containers), 2 420 have been destroyed, which means that the anticipated 10 years deadline for CW destruction (after entry into force EIF) will be not managed. For Russia and USA the allowed extension by another 5 years has been already agreed. From the 64 CWPFs (operational after 1946), declared by 12 SPs, 53 have been certified as destroyed/converted. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is briefly presented and main results of the First Review Conference (2003) analysed on the base of the adopted principal documents. Future problems of implementing the CWC are connected in the first line with its universality, because among 16 non-SPs, several countries (located mainly in the Near East and on the Korean peninsula) are presumed to be CW-possessors. Special emphasis is laid on both, threats and benefits of the scientific and technological development for current implementing the CWC as well as of its implementation in future after all CW stockpiles have been destroyed.
i Libija).

Vodikove veze s metalima
Hydrogen Bonds Involving Metal Centers
N. Raos
G. Pavlović
Polusendvični kompleksi; interakcije na 3 središta; platinini kompleksi
hydrogen bonds
Hydrogen bonds involving metal center as a hydrogen donor or hydrogen acceptor are only a specific type of metal-hydrogen interactions; it is therefore not easy to differentiate hydrogen bond from other metal-hydrogen interactions, especially agostic ones. The first part of the review is therefore devoted to the results of structural chemistry and molecular spectroscopy (NMR, IR), as a tool for differentiating hydrogen bondings from other hydrogen interactions. The classical examples of Pt···H-N, Pt···H-O, Pt···H-C, and Pd···H-N hydrogen bonds were discussed as well as hydrogen bonds involving half-sandwich complexes (η5-C5R5)ML2, where M stays for Co, Ir or Rh, R for H or CH3, and L for CO, PMe3 or C2H4. The paper deals also with metal donating (M-H···A) and bifurcated hydrogen bonds. The hydrogen interactions in complexes of other heavy metals (Ni, Cu, Ag, Os) were also briefly discussed.

Novi pristup stehiometrijskom računu
A New Approach to Stoichiometric Problem Solving
T. Cvitaš
Stehiometrija; veličinski račun; doseg reakcije
Stoichiometry; problem solving
A New Approachz to Stoichiometric Problem Soloving
Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, Horvatovac 102a, HR-10000 Zagreb, Croatia
E-mail: cvitas@chem.pmf.hr
It is proposed that stoichiometric problem solving be based on changes of measured physical quantities such as masses, chemical amounts, numbers of molecules, etc. of reactants or products and that the notation be adjusted accordingly: the changes should be denoted by the difference operator as is usual in the field of thermodynamics. Instead of using ratios of masses, amounts, etc. it is better to use ratios of changes in the corresponding quantities. This leads to the appearance of negative values which are automatically compensated by the accepted definition of stoichiometric
numbers. All these changes are mutually related via the extent of reaction and introductory chemistry courses for chemists and related fields should not avoid the concept of extent of reaction. This quantity is, as a "quantity of state" of advancement of the chemical process, essential for the understanding of chemical thermodynamics and chemical kinetics, but it also
shows certain advantages in solving more complicated stoichiometric problems.

Polymerization; (Meth)acryl-Dicyclohexylurea; Thermal Stability
Rezultati pokazuju izrazite razlike u početnoj brzini polimerizacije i svojstvima polimera akrilatnih i metakrilatnih monomera u ovisnosti o supstituentu u bočnom lancu.
This paper describes the polymerization of N-acryl-N,N'-dicyclohexylurea (A-DCU), N-methacryl- N,N'-dicyclohexylurea (MA-DCU) and N-methacryl-N,N'-diisopropylurea (MA-DiPrU) monomers with styrene (St) and α-methylstyrene (α-MeSt), thermal stability and degradation mechanism of prepared copolymers. Free-radical initiated polymerization was performed to low conversion by using dibenzoyl peroxyde (Bz2O2) in butanone at 70 °C under nitrogen stream. It was found that the pendant group in (meth)acrylic monomers have high influence to the polymerization as well as to the copolymer properties. A-DCU readily homopolymerized and copolymerized with St and r1,A-DCU = 0.72 and r2,α-MeSt= 0.07, while MA-DCU does not homopolymerized or copolymerized with α-MeSt under the same conditions, but copolymerized with St to randomly composed copolymers after a long heating of comonomers. Copolymers A-DCU with α-MeSt prepared under different monomer-to monomer-ratios in the feed have random composition with an azeotropic point at ratio of 0.75 (A-DCU) to 0.25 (St). The initial rate of copolymerization indicates that the rate increases almost linearly with the increase of ratio of A-DCU in the comonomer feed. Reactivity ratios determined by the Kelen-Tüdös method are: r1,A-DCU = 0.72 and r2,α-MeSt = 0.07. Molar mass of copolymers increased from 8.5 to 30 (kg mol-1) when mole ratio of A-DCU to α-MeStin the feed increased from 0.1 to 0.9. Poly(A-DCU) and copolymers with α-MeSt decomposed by two-step mechanism. Under TGA (nitrogen,10 °C min-1) conditions in the first step between 180 °C and 250 °C a quantitative yield of cyclohexylisocyanate (C6H11NCO) separated by a decomposition of dicyclohexylurea (DCU). The thermally stable residue represented poly(acryl-cyclohexylamide), poly(A-CHA), and copolymer with α-MeSt, poly(A-CHA-co-α-MeSt). Glass transition temperature (Tg) of poly(A-DCU) was at 184 °C and Tg of residue, poly(A-CHA), was at 161 °C. Tg's of the copolymers are higher for the copolymer with higher A-DCU content. Tg's of residue are increased also when the content of A-CHA in copolymer increased.
Copolymers of A-DCU with St have a random composition with an azeotropic point at a ratio of 0.73 (A-DCU) to 0.27 (St). The rate of copolymerization of A-DCU with St increases by the increase of A-DCU in the feed. The reactivity ratio are: r1,A-DCU = 0.80 and r2, St = 0.50. Molar mass of copolymer, prepared at equimolar ratio of monomers in the feed, is Mw = 78.6 kg/mol-1. These copolymers decompose in TGA conditions by two-step mechanism, which correspond to the mechanism explained for the copolymers of A-DCU with α-MeSt.
MA-DCU copolymerized with St to randomly composed copolymers. The reactivity ratio determined by the KT method are: r1, MA-DCU= 0.18 and r2, St = 4.84. These values indicate that MA-DCU favors cross-propagation over homopolymerization, while St favors homopolymerization as opposite to cross-propagation. It also shows, that since St is more reactive than MA-DCU, copolymers contain a higher proportion of St units. It was found, that the rate of copolymerization of MA-DCU with St is slower than the rate of copolymerization of A-DCU with St, and that the rate of copolymerization decreases by increasing the amount of MA-DCU in the feed. Molar mass of copolymer prepared at equimolar ratios of comonomers in the feed is Mw=12 kg mol-1. Thermal properties of poly(MA-DCU-co-St) are similar to those previously described in the decomposition of poly[A-DCU-co-St(α-MeSt)].
The results have also shown quite a big influence of DiPrU group in MA-iPrU to the polymerization with St and α -MeSt. Namely, MA-DiPrU does not homopolymerized or copolymerized with α -MeSt, but can polymerize with St only after a long heating of comonomers at 70 °C. The copolymerization of MA-DiPrU with St is a statistical reaction in which regardless of monomer-tomonomer ratios in the feed, an excess of St was in the copolymer. The reactivity ratios (KT method) are: r1, MA-DiPrU = 0.39 and r2, St = 1.03. The obtained data indicate a monomer tendency to alternating structure. The initial rate of copolymerization decreases with increasing the content of MA-DiPrU monomer in the feed. Molar mass of all copolymers are approximately of the same values, Mw = 12 - 8 kg mol-1 and Mn = 8.7 - 6.2 kg mol-1. Thermal behavior of those copolymers correspond to the behavior of acrylic and methacrylic polymers containing DCU as pendant group. Namely, all copolymers decompose under TGA conditions by a two-step mechanism. In the first step between 180 °C and 250 °C isopropylisocyanate (C3H7NCO) separates by degradation of diisopropylurea (DiPrU) in the side chain. The thermally stable residue represents the copolymer of methacryl-isopropylamide with St, which decompose by one-step mechanism between 280 °C and 450 °C.

Utjecaj derivata imidazola na koroziju bakra
Influence of Imidazole Derivatives on Copper Corrosion
H. Otmačić
Inhibitori korozije; kloridni medij; elektrokemijska impedancijska spektroskopija; kvarc-kristalna mikrovaga
corrosion inhibitors; Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy
Inhibiting efficiency of non-toxic imidazole derivatives (presented on Figure 1), as copper corrosion inhibitors in w = 3 % NaCl solution, was studied in the present work. Electrochemical investigations performed by potentiodynamic polarization measurements have shown that all studied compounds decrease the rate of copper corrosion while their inhibiting efficiency increases with molecular mass (Table 1). Except the molecular mass, the nature of the supstituent significantly influences the inhibiting property. Compounds containing alkyl supstituent show lower inhibiting
efficiency than aryl containing imidazoles, but their efficiency is temperature independent while the efficiencies of aryl supstitued imidazoles slightly decrease with the increase of temperature (Fig. 3). Furthermore, alkyl imidazoles influence more on cathodic corrosion reaction, while aryl
imidazoles have more influence on anodic corrosion reaction.
Additional electrochemical (EQCM and EIS) and spectroscopic investigations have shown that, even between the two most efficient corrosion inhibitors, 1-phenyl-4-methylimidazole and 1-(p-tolyl)-4-methylimidazole, exist important differences in the mechanism of retardation of the corrosion process. The inhibitor that contains the tolyl substituent decreases the corrosion rate of copper due to the formation of thin layer of adsorbate, while in the case of 1-phenyl-4-methylimidazole, formation of thick layer can be followed with time (Fig. 4). From EIS (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) studies, it was observed that these inhibitors significantly increase absolute impedance of copper which shows that they efficiently protect copper from corrosion. In the case of 1-phenyl-4-methylimidazole absolute impedance increases in time (Fig. 5 and 6) which means that the protective layer is slowly forming on the metal surface. Studies performed in the presence of 1-(p-tolyl)-4-methylimidazole showed that already after short immersion time (Fig. 5) very protective surface film is formed and it remains stable in time (Fig. 6.)
Investigations performed by SEM and AFM measurements confirm that 1-phenyl-4-methylimidazole
forms three-dimensional protective surface layer while in the presence of 1-(p-tolyl)-4--methylimidazole copper surface is protected by a thin inhibitor film.

40-Godišnjica institucije Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre posvećene pohranjivanju podataka o molekularnim i kristalnim strukturama - "Cambridge Structural Database"
40th Anniversary of The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre Dedicated to Deposition of Data Related to Crystal and Molecular Structures, "Cambridge Structural Database"

crystallographic databases;CCDC; CSD; crystall structure; moleculare structure
Ključna uloga CSD-a u istraživanjima vezanim uz kristalografiju, kemiju, znanosti o materijalima, fiziku i kemiju čvrstog stanja, znanosti o životu, farmakologiju, posebice u dizajnu lijekova, dokumentirana je u opsežnoj znanstvenoj literaturi.
The article is dedicated to 40th anniversary of The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC), the world-known centre (http://www.ccdc.cam.ac.uk) responsible for deposition and control of crystallographic data, including atomic coordinates that define the three-dimensional structures of organic molecules and metal complexes containing organic ligands. Cambride Structural Database (CSD), one among the first established electronic databases, nowadays is the most significant crystallographic database in the world. CSD has about 400,000 deposited structures. The use of the extensive database, which is growing rapidly, needs support of efficient and sophisticated software for searching, analysing and visualising structural data. The seminal role of CSD in the research related to crystallography, chemistry, material sciences, solid state physics and chemistry, life sciences, pharmacology, and in particular in drug design, has been documented in more than 1300 scientific papers. The important issues of CCDC are the accuracy of deposited data and development of software that enables a wide variety of applications. Such demanding project requires higly competent team of experts; thus the article brings into focus the scientific approach of the team based on the long tradition in crystallography, modelling and informatics. The article is not dedicated to 40th anniversary of the centre only, but it also reveals how Cambridge Structural Database can be used in the research and teaching. The use of electronic media and computer graphics makes data mining" very efficient and useful but also esthetically appealing due to the molecular architecture.
At the Rudjer Bošković Institute, Zagreb, Croatia there is The National Affiliated Centre of Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre responsible for communication and dissemination of CSD in Croatia, Slovenia and Macedonia.

Pyrolysis of Coal
Piroliza ugljena
A. Rađenović

The paper presents a review of relevant literature on coal pyrolysis.
Pyrolysis, as a process technology, has received considerable attention from many researchers because it is an important intermediate stage in coal conversion.
Reactions parameters as the temperature, pressure, coal particle size, heating rate, soak time, type of reactor, etc. determine the total carbon conversion and the transport of volatiles and thereby
the product distribution. Part of the possible environmental pollutants could be removed by optimising the pyrolysis conditions. Therefore, this process will be subsequently interesting for coal utilization in the future.
Na dobivanje produkata primarnim i sekundarnim reakcijama utječu brojni faktori (temperatura, tlak, atmosfera, brzina i vrijeme zagrijavanja, vrsta ugljena, i sl.).

Eksperimentalne metode ispitivanja katalizatora
Experimental Methods for Catalyst Testing
S. Zrnčević
laboratorijski katalitički reaktori; ispitivanje katalizatora; eksperimentalna provjera i kriteriji ispitivanja fizičkih procesa prijenosa
laboratory reactors; catalyst testing; experimental data
Catalysis plays a critical role in virtually every industry. Often it is the key to making an entirely new technology or breathing new life into otherwise, mature technology. In addition to continued needs for productivity improvements, efficient use of energy and raw materials, minimal impact
on the environment, and heightened industrial safety add a new aspect to the importance of catalytic innovation.
In the development of catalysts various stages can be distinguished. This development process cover the whole range from the new idea for a process or catalyst via the catalyst preparation, catalyst screening, establishing reaction networks, kinetic studies, and life tests to scale up on pilot plant level, before a new or modified process is introduced.
The first step in the engineering of a newly discovered catalyst is to quantify the phenomena that govern its performance. These fall into two broad categories: transport phenomena (i. e. heat, mass, and momentum transfer) and reaction kinetics.
The paper presents correlations that describe these phenomena, along with guidance for obtaining, from experimental data, the values for the constants in the correlating equations. Various types of laboratory reactors for catalyst testing, in order to obtain the relevant information with regard to intrinsic activity, selectivity, deactivation, is also described.

Carboxylated Polyurethanes Containing Hyperbranched Polyester Soft Segments
Karboksilirani poliuretani s visoko razgranatim poliesterskim mekanim segmentima

polyurethanes: polyurethane anionomers; hyperbranched polymers; aqueous dispersions
poliuretani
hyperbranched polyester soft segments (HB PU) with functional carboxylic groups in order to enable the preparation of stable HB PU dispersions. Carboxylated hyperbranched polyurethanes were synthesized using a hyperbranched polyester based on 2,2-bis(methylol)propionic acid of the fourth pseudo-generation (BoltornŽ H40) and hexamethylene (HDI) or isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). The reactivity of hyperbranched polyester with HDI was lower than expected, possibly due to the presence of less reactive hydroxyl groups in the linear repeat units. A gel was formed at mole ratios rNCO/OH = 1:2 or 1:4. The synthesis of HB PU was performed with partly esterified hyperbranched polyester with lowered hydroxyl functionality. The carboxyl groups were incorporated in the HB PU backbone by reaction of residual hydroxyl groups with cis-1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic anhydride. HB PU aqueous dispersions were stable at least for two months, although their films were brittle. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of blends of linear and HB PU decreased with increasing content of HB PU whereas elongation at break remained nearly constant, which was explained in terms of looser chain packing due to more open tree-like hyperbranched structures.
Rad prikazuje sintezu i karakterizaciju poliuretana s mekanim segmentima od visoko razgranatoga poliestera (HB PU) s funkcionalnim karboksilnim skupinama s namjenom pripreme stabilnih disperzija HB PU. Karboksilne skupine smo u lanac HB PU uveli s esterifikacijom neizreagiranih hidroksilnih skupina s anhidridom cis-1,2-cikloheksandikarboksilne kiseline.
