Fauna and seasonal dynamics of aquatic insects have been investigated in the wider area of Kopački Rit Nature Park over a period of two years. The investigation, carried out at biological localities, included channels as permanent habitats of water insects. Among 42 species of water insects, 14 belong to the order Heteroptera and 28 to the order Coleoptera. Fluctuation in numbers of water insects during the season has been recorded and the greatest numbers of insects were recorded during August. The most abundant are Plea minutissima and Ilyocoris cimicoides. Situated in the midst of the floodplains, Kopački Rit provides specific ecological living conditions for water insects.

analiza flore; otok Krapanj; šibenski arhipelag; Hrvatska
The paper provides a list of 160 vascular plant taxa new for the flora of the island of Krapanj (Šibenik archipelago), the outcome of research carried out in the period 2000 to 2004. These new taxa refer mainly to indigenous and naturalised (133 taxa) and less to cultivated plants (27 taxa). Together with the 270 taxa that have been published previously this makes a total of 430 taxa of vascular flora recorded for the island of Krapanj so far.
The great richness of the flora of this small island (0,36 km2) is explicable by the proximity of the mainland and diversity of habitats as well as the good population density.

An overview of harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones) in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Pregled faune kosaca (Arachnida: Opiliones) Bosne i Hercegovine

paučnjaci; bibliografija; Bosna i Hercegovina; Opiliones
A critical review of the literature on harvestmen from Bosnia and Herzegovina was performed, and data from major collections of harvestmen in Bosnia and Herzegovina have been listed to provide an overview of recent knowledge on the topic. Where needed, comments and/or corrections have been added to avoid further confusion. At the moment, 54 valid species and two subspecies have been identified of 59 nominal species in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Six nominal species must be confirmed with respect to taxonomical status and validity. Systematic taxonomical revisions are strongly required in the travuniid genera and in Paranemastoma. Six further species may be present in the country, and the discovery of new species cannot be excluded. According to present knowledge, the richness of the harvestman fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina is comparable to that in the surrounding countries.

This paper presents recent found localities for species Phoxinellus alepidotus (Heckel, 1843) and Aulopyge huegelii (Heckel, 1841) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Found localities are at the highest altitude ever detected and the locality for the species A. huegelii Hec. is the first ever for the Black Sea basin. The species P. alepidotus Hec. and A. huegelii Hec. were probably unintentionally introduced to the Šatorsko Lake during the 1970s and 1980s while other species of trout were being introduced.
Vrste P. alepidotus Hec. i A. huegelii Hec. vjerojatno su slučajno unesene u Šatorsko jezero tijekom sedamdesetih i osamdesetih godina 20. st., za vrijeme unošenja drugih vrsta pastrva.

On the harvestman genus Lola Kratochvil (Opiliones: Laniatores)

Lola; Phalangodidae; Opiliones; troglobiont; špilja; Hrvatska
The species Lola insularis Kratochvíl, the sole representative of the genus, is redescribed on the basis of recently collected adult specimens. As the holotype is apparently lost, a neotype is designated from this new material. The previously unknown male and the genitalia of both sexes are described and illustrated for the first time. The genus appears distinct from the known phalangodid genera in both genitalic and somatic characters. Although the relationship of Lola Kratochvíl to other genera is not clear, it resembles in some characters both the Palearctic genus Ausobskya Martens and the Nearctic genera Sitalcina Banks, Texella Goodnight & Goodnight, and Phalangodes Tellkampf.

Decoration preferences of Maja crispata Risso 1827 (Brachyura, Majidae)

Decoration preferences, position, structure and morphology of the hooked setae were questions addressed in this study. Data were collected through the use of a scanning electron microscope. The location of the hooked setae on the exoskeleton was mapped.
Spider crabs (family Majidae) often decorate themselves. They put pieces of marine organisms among the hooked setae of the exoskeleton. The decoration might serve as protection from visual predators. M. crispata is an opportunist that uses several algae, based on the abundance of the available algae and the morphological structure. M. crispata also is a generalist: it attempts to look less like a crab in order to become invisible to its visual predators.

Kodeks djeluje retroaktivno i zamjenjuje sva prethodna izdanja.
The Cultivated Plant Code is a system of rules, recommendations, examples and notes for naming cultivated plants in accordance with the Botanical Code (2000). The Botanical Code governs the scientific names in Latin form for both wild and cultivated plants, and the Cultivated Plant Code governs the naming of plants in cultivation, some only to level of genus but others to the level of species or below, by adding their epithets to the scientific names in any language, except in Latin. The Code now deals with the naming of just two categories of cultivated plants: the cultivar and the Group. Epithets in the names of cultivated plants should be distinguished typographically from the scientific names to which they are assigned. Notwithstanding the term cultivar, in some national and international legislation or other legal conventions, the words variety, sort or its equivalents in other languages are legal terms for the word cultivar, if they exactly correspond to the provisions as defined in this Code. This edition differs from previous one in 215 changes of articles/items. The Code functions retroactively and supersedes all previous editions.

Campanula pyramidalis; Campanula kapelae; Hrvatska
On Samarske stijene (Velika Kapela, Gorski kotar, Croatia), within the Nature Reserve, at the altitude of 1200–1300 m a.s., grows a peculiar taxon of Campanula in the cliff chasmophyte vegetation of the alliance Micromerion croaticae Ht (order Potentilletalia caulescentis Br.-Bl.). Although the plant is similar to Campanula pyramidalis in terms of habitat, and up to 70 cm tall, morphological and ecological data suggest the possibility of a new taxon within C. pyramidalis aggregate. According to the mountain massif of Velika Kapela where it grows, we propose the name of Campanula kapelae.

Anthoxanthum odoratum agg.; karta rasprostranjenosti; Hrvatska; Bosna i Hercegovina; Crna Gora; Srbija; Makedonija
The present paper makes a contribution to knowledge of the distribution of Anthoxanthum alpinum in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia. The data from literature, the investigation of herbarium material and the results of field research reveal that A. alpinum is present in the area of the Dinaric mountain chain as part of alpine grassland vegetation at altitudes of 1400 m a.s.l. and above. The ecological optimum for the species in Croatia is in the stands dominated by Nardus stricta, but it has also been recorded in the Festucetum pungentis association and in mountain communities with Deschampsia caespitosa.
Festucetum pungentis i u planinskim sastojinama vrste Deschampsia caespitosa.

Adaptation of the mouthparts in some subterranean Cholevinae (Coleoptera, Leiodidae)
Prilagodba usnih organa kod nekih podzemnih holevina (Cholevinae) (Coleoptera, Leiodidae)

Cholevinae are a group of beetles with many cave representatives that are mainly detritivorous or saprophagous. Some species show modifications of the mouthparts on account of their dietary niche, being adapted to a semi-aquatic way of life, or on account of the degree of adaptation to the life in caves. Differences are obvious also among the genera, and cave species that are at the same level of adaptation. The main modifications concern the shape and structure of the different parts, as well as their length and the disposal of hairs, bristles and setae. The adaptation to an aquatic dietary niche has modified the mandibles, which acquired a spoon-like form to bring water near the mouth, the lacinia taking on the role of stirring and the galea of filtering the organic particles with its fine and very dense hairs. The apparent uniformity of the subterranean environmental conditions and of the trophic resources, together with the scarcity of the latter, might mistakenly lead to the conclusion of a one-way evolution for the underground colonizers. The observed differences between the mouthparts of the studied species can be good material for taxonomists, who can include some of these features in their studies, often difficult due to the homogenous morphology of many inhabitants of the underground. As a contribution to the comparative study of the mouthparts at some representatives of cholevin beetles, we can also highlight the effect of adaptation to cave life on the mouthparts and the evidence of a divergent evolution in a relatively constant environment in terms of climate and food input.

A total of 85 specimens belonging to 14 snake species collected from the Western Taurus Mountain Range were examined in this study. Along with morphological information about the species, the study contains some topographical observations concerning the localities. The collection of material from a number of new localities helped efforts to complete missing information related to the distribution of species in this region. Moreover, the data obtained were compared with those contained in the relevant literature with the purpose of shedding light on the taxonomical status of the species.

Terrestrial snails (Mollusca: Gastropoda terrestria) of Dugi otok (Croatia)
Kopneni puževi (Mollusca: Gastropoda terrestria) Dugog otoka (Hrvatska)

In field research into Dugi otok outside the confines of Telašćica Nature Park, and two northern islets (Mali Lagan, Veli Lagan) we found 35 species of terrestrial snails with shells. Of these, 33 species had been recorded in the literature with reference to Dugi otok, including the surrounding southern islets that form part of Telašćica Nature Park. Cepaea vindobonensis and Hygromia cinctella are species that have been newly found. Our investigations did not reveal 10 species that are cited in the literature. We considered that two taxa (Delima blanda conspurcata, Cepaea nemoralis) do not live on the island and the islets stated, while the remaining eight taxa (Vallonia costata, Granopupa granum, Truncatellina claustralis, Agathylla lamellosa, Delima edmibrani, Testacella scutulum, Cochlicella acuta, Chilostoma setosa) are held to be certain denizens of Dugi otok, which we did not find because our investigations were not systematic enough or because they do not live outside the area in which they were recorded (Telašćica Nature Park). Among the species that attract particular attention are: Delima edmibrani, which is narrowly endemic to Dugi otok; Agathylla lamellosa, of which this is the northernmost finding site; Chondrina spelta ventilatoris, because it is the westernmost finding site; and Testacella scutulum and Paralaoma servilis, because they are found so seldom in Croatian malacofauna. Dugi otok, with the surrounding islets and rocks mentioned, has a total of 43 species, which constitutes, in comparison with other islands of the eastern Adriatic, a relatively rich terrestrial malacofauna.
Terenskim istraživanjima Dugog otoka izvan granica PP »Telašćica« i dva sjevernije položena otočića (Mali i Veli Lagan) našli smo 35 vrsta kopnenih puževa s kućicom. Dugi otok s navedenim okolnim otočićima i hridima broji ukupno 43 vrste što predstavlja, u usporedbi s drugim istočnojadranskim otocima, relativno bogatu kopnenu malakofaunu.

Marine fauna of Mljet National Park (Adriatic Sea, Croatia). 5. Mollusca: Bivalvia.
Morska fauna Nacionalnog parka Mljet (Jadransko more, Hrvatska) 5. Mollusca: Bivalvia.
T. Šiletić.

Bivalvia; Mljet; morska fauna; Jadransko more
A 130 bivalve species from 38 families were recorded in the Mljet National Park during research carried out from 1995 to 2002. In situ observations and collections were realised by skin and SCUBA diving at 63 sites, to a maximum depth of 58 m. At 21 stations bivalves were collected by Van Veen grab, at six stations by trammel bottom sets and at one station outside the borders of the National Park by a commercial bottom trawl. For each species, the general distribution, depth range, habitat, ecological data and significant remarks are presented. Records published previously were reviewed and a bivalve check-list for the Mljet National Park with a total of 146 species belonging to 39 families was generated. Listed species account for about 70% of bivalves noted in the Adriatic Sea. Sixty-one species were recorded for the first time in the Mljet Island area. One juvenile individual of an Indo-Pacific species Semipallium coruscans coruscans (Hinds, 1845) was recorded for the first time in the Mediterranean.
Some species rarely noted for the Adriatic Sea, and also rarely recorded at the stations surveyed were Nuculana pella, Palliolum striatum, Pseudamussium sulcatum, Limatula gwyni, Thyasira granulosa, Astarte sulcata, Venus casina, Globivenus effosa, Clausinella fasciata, Lajonkairia lajonkairii, Mysia undata, Thracia villosiuscula, Cardiomya costellata, Ennucula aegeensis, Barbatia clathrata, and Galeomma turtoni.
This paper presents the first verified find of the species Polyommatus (Agrodiaetus) damon (Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775) (syn.: ausonia Verity, 1915) (Lycaenidae, Polyommatini) in the Croatian butterfly fauna. The real status and presence of this species in Croatia was uncertain until the recent discovery. The Damon Blue was found in south-eastern Croatia, at the locality Gornja Korita on Kamešnica Mountain (990 m a.s.l.) on September 1 and 2, 2005. The biology, ecology and protection measures of the P. damon are also discussed.

The European polecat (Mustela putorius Linnaeus, 1758) in Croatia – management concerns
Europski obični tvor (Mustela putorius Linnaeus, 1758) u Hrvatskoj – smjernice gospodarenja

polecat; decline of population; Republic of Croatia; recovery plan
obični tvor; pad brojnosti; Republika Hrvatska; plan oporavka
As in other European countries, there are some indications that the polecat population in the Republic of Croatia is declining. Gamekeepers rarely hunt polecats and if they do it is mainly at the request of landowners. Along with maltreatment, their poor cultural image, accidental poisoning and road traffic accidents can probably be marked as the main causes of the declining polecat population. In order to acquire firm data on the number of polecats, their behaviour and social organization, further studies are to be encouraged. Based on the results of these studies, a recovery plan should be arranged. This plan must include the creation of a positive image for polecats at all levels of society and the prevention of a further decline in the polecat population brought about by continuing inappropriate exposure of poisoned baits.

We investigated the ability of surface- and cave-dwelling P. mexicana females to localise conspecific males in light and darkness. Females of both populations showed a predilection for the male in both experiments. Non-visual association behaviour in darkness in the surface form can be viewed as a pre-adaptation to cave life in this species

This paper presents new findings of the rare butterfly Proterebia afra dalmata (Godart, [1824]) along the Dalmatian coast in Croatia. The subspecies was found on seven new sites: in Lozovac near the Krka National Park, in the vicinity of the main spring of the Cetina River, near Velo Blato on the island of Pag and at four locations on the northern slopes of Mt Biokovo between Lončari, Kaoci and Turija (all inside the borders of Biokovo Nature Park). The range and the habitat characteristics of this threatened subspecies are also discussed.

The Barbus meridionalis petenyi Heck. is a typical benthophagous fish, feeding on the zoobenthos and plant components and thanks to its sensitivity to the changes in surrounding medium is an ideal object for indication of the health of aquatic ecosystems. The Teleostei fish liver is susceptible to numerous, both toxic and metabolic, disturbances.
Liver pieces of 40 individuals collected from Trebeništa Reservoir in July 1999, were excised and processed for standard histopathological analysis. The obtained results revealed pathological changes in the liver tissue including parenchyme cell necrosis associated with hemorragia.

This paper gives the floristic composition of a therophytic plant association, developed on the island of Hvar in Croatia, earlier discovered and studied in the region of Madrid by a Spanish botanist, Jesús Izco, under the name of Saxifrago tridactyliti – Hornungietum petreae. Although occupying small areas, primarily on old heaps of rejected stone of gravel size covered by leached and decalcified soil, it can nevertheless be considered important since in the vegetation cover of Croatia it contributes to the increase of biological diversity.

Croatodirus casalei Giachino & Jalžić, new species from N Velebit, Lubenovac, Slovačka jama pothole, and C. ozimeci Casale, Giachino & Jalžić new species, from Lokve, Lokvarka špilja cave, are described. The morphological features of the new taxa are compared with those of the type species of the genus (C. bozicevici Casale, Giachino & Jalžić, 2000). The genus is confirmed as a homogeneous, well characterized and monophyletic unit, and is attributed to the phyletic lineage of Anthroherpon.
Velebitodromus, new genus, smidai new species, is described from N Velebit, Lubenovac, Mali kuk, Slovačka jama pothole. Owing to both external features and structures of male and female genitalia, the genus is attributed to the phyletic lineage of Anthroherpon, and is recognized as related to the genera Anthroherpon Reitter, 1889, and Paranthrophilon Reitter, 1889.

During the summers from 1995–2000 the benthos was studied at 63 sites by scuba- and skin-divers. Polyplacophora molluscs were recorded at 36 sites. Ten species were identified, i.e. 63 % of the Adriatic Sea chitons, and 34 % of taxa recorded in the Mediterranean. Synonyms, habitat, depth range and general distribution are noted for each species. With the aim of updating the distributional pattern of chitons in the Adriatic Sea, the authors’ unpublished records of a number of species have been appended.

Trachurus mediterraneus; morfometrijska i meristička obilježja; Jadransko more
The relationship between morphometric measurements (15) and meristic characters (8) were examined in 237 specimens of Mediterranean horse mackerel (105 females, 101 males and 31 immature specimens) caught in the central Adriatic Sea. The goal of this paper was to investigate: whether there are morphological differences between males and females; the existence of homogenous or heterogeneous morphology stock; changes in morphometric characters with an increase in body length.
Morphological differences between males and females were not marked. Modal values specific for Trachurus species morphologic characters, such as number of lateral line scales, maximum height of scales in anterior and posterior part of lateral line, point at which dorsal accessory lateral line is terminated and values of other biometric properties indicated a possible homogeneous morphology stock of T. mediterraneus in the central Adriatic Sea. Changes in some morphometric characters obtained in conjunction with an increase in body length showed that smaller specimens have longer head, anal and ventral fin than adult specimens. On the other hand, with an increase in total length, the fish have larger preorbital and postorbital distance, smaller eye and maximum height of scales in the lateral line than smaller fishes. The negative correlation recorded for the maximum and minimum body depth indicates that the body becomes progressively elongated. The meristic characters of Mediterranean horse mackerel from different Mediterranean and NE Atlantic areas are mostly in agreement with the data in our study.
Manji primjerci imaju veću dužinu glave, podrepnu i trbušne peraje nego veći primjerci. S druge strane veće ribe imaju veću predočnu i zaočnu udaljenost, manju veličinu oka i manju visinu ljusaka u bočnoj pruzi u odnosu na manje ribe.

A review of the development of the vegetation in the inland area of Croatia includes the period of the Postglacial, and is based on a synthesis of previous archaeobotanical research, including pollen analysis, and analysis of plant macro-fossils. Changes in vegetation through individual postglacial periods are shown, particular attention being devoted to anthropogenic impacts on the vegetation.

Algal occurrence, with particular emphasis on diatoms, was investigated over a two-year period on the travertine barriers of the Krka River in Slovenia. The purpose of the investigation was to establish qualitative composition and the relative abundance of the periphyton. In 1999 and 2000, basic physical and chemical parameters were measured. Altogether, 81 algal taxa were determined. Most of them belonged to Bacillariophyceae. Fifteen species and subspecies were new to Slovenia, 14 of them belonging to Bacillariophyceae and one to Cyanobacteria. Most of the new species and subspecies belonged to genera Nitzschia (5) and Navicula (4).

Plecotus macrobullaris; P. auritus; P. austriacus; P. kolombatovici; visinska rasprostranjenost; Hrvatska
The altitudinal distribution of bats of four Plecotus species in Croatia was analysed. P. austriacus and P. kolombatovici are restricted to lower altitudes, under 800 m a.s.l.. P. auritus inhabits continental forest habitats, preferably beech forests, with the exception of Pannonian lowland riparian forests of common oak which also lie under 100 m a.s.l.. As distinct from the other three Plecotus species, Croatian specimens of P. macrobullaris have an extremely wide altitudinal distribution, ranging from sea level to mountain tops, but with most localities under 800 m a.s.l.

Through plant geography research into the evergreen macchia vegetation on the island of Murter done in the last ten years, two clearly differentiated alliances inside the class Quercetea ilicis Br.-Bl. 1947 – Quercion ilicis Br.-Bl. (1931) 1936 and Oleo-Ceratonion Br.-Bl. 1936 have been determined. In the alliance Quercion ilicis are the following associations: Myrto-Quercetum ilicis Trinajstić (1976) 1985; Fraxino orni-Quercetum ilicis H-ić (1956) 1958; Ostryo-Quercetum ilicis Trinajstić (1965) 1974 and in the alliance Oleo-Ceratonion the associations of the xerothermal Phoenician juniper macchia – Pistacio lentisci-Juniperetum phoeniceae Trinajstić 1987 and Querco ilicis-Pinetum halepensis Loisel 1971.
Xerothermal Phoenician juniper macchia constitutes a stage of the progression towards the development of evergreen forest vegetation after the termination of anthropogenic impact. It develops in the neglected olive-groves, vineyards, garrigues and rocky pasture lands on the island and the surrounding small islands. A total of 27 phytocenological relevés were made. Relevés were made and analyzed using the classical Braun-Blanquet method.
Tijekom zadnjih desetak godina fitogeografskih istraživanja vazdazelene vegetacije makije otoka Murtera utvr|ene su dvije jasno izdiferencirane sveze unutar razreda Quercetea ilicis Br.-Bl. 1947 – Quercion ilicis Br.-Bl. (1931) 1936 i Oleo-Ceratonion Br.-Bl. 1936. Unutar sveze Quercion ilicis su asocijacije: Myrto-Quercetum ilicis Trinajstić (1976) 1985; Fraxino orni-Quercetum ilicis H-ić (1956) 1958; Ostryo-Quercetum ilicis Trinajstić (1965) 1974 i unutar sveze Oleo-Ceratonion asocijacije kserotermne makije somine Pistacio lentisci-Juniperetum phoeniceae Trinajsti} 1987 i Querco ilicis-Pinetum halepensis Loisel 1971 (PANDŽA 1998).

analiza flore; otok Obonjan; šibenski arhipelag; Hrvatska
Research into the vascular flora of Obonjan, a small island (0,7 km2) of the Šibenik archipelago, was carried out from 2000 to 2003. A total of 230 species and subspecies classified into 163 genera and 53 families were registered. Only three species, Conyza bonariensis, C. canadensis and C. sumatrensis had been found previously while 227 plant taxa are reported in this paper for the first time.
The results of the analysis of the flora show that Therophyta (46.96%) are dominant in the flora, as are plants of the Mediterranean floral element (53.04%), indicating the Mediterranean character of the flora of the island.

An overview of harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones) in Croatia
Pregled faune kosaca (Arachnida: Opiliones) u Hrvatskoj
T. Novak
arachnids; bibliography; Opiliones; Croatia
paučnjaci; bibliografija; Opiliones; Hrvatska
Critical review of the literature on harvestmen from Croatia was made, and data from major collections of harvestmen in Croatia are listed to provide an overview of recent knowledge on the topic. Where needed comments and/or corrections have been added to avoid further confusion. Altogether, 64 valid species and one subspecies have been firmly identified in Croatia. Two further species are undoubtedly present although not yet recorded, bringing the total number of opilionid species to 66 plus one subspecies. Potentially, up to 9–11 further species inhabit the country, and the discovery of further new species cannot be excluded. Taxonomical revisions are required in some taxa. According to present knowledge, the harvestman fauna of Croatia is among the richest ones in the Balkans.

In field research into the Telašćica Nature Park (Dugi otok, Croatia), 38 species of terrestrial snails were determined. Of these, only 14 taxa had been recorded in the literature. Among the species, particularly prominent were the narrowly endemic Delima edmibrani Štamol et Slapnik, 2002 the range of which is restricted exclusively to the borders of the Park, the endemic Agathylla lamellosa (Schubert et Wagner, 1829), which has so far been known from South Dalmatia and Montenegro, Testacella scutulum G. B. Sowerby I, 1820, for which Telašćica is the second and at the same time the most southerly site in Croatia, the endemic Chondrina spelta ventilatoris (Westerlund, 1875), for which this is the westernmost finding site, and Paralaoma servilis (Schuttleworth, 1852), for which this is the sixth site recorded in Croatia. Because of the many visitors whose movements represent a potential threat to the habitats of endemic species, it is proposed that this area be protected.

Pitfall samples were taken during summer 2003 in 25 habitats of the Baranya triangle (Croatia) to describe the isopod fauna. The 125 traps caught a total of 2,808 isopods belonging to 11 species: Haplophthalmus danicus, Hyloniscus riparius, Platyarthrus hoffmannseggii, Cylisticus convexus, Porcellium collicola, Protracheoniscus politus, Trachelipus ratzeburgii, Trachelipus nodulosus, Trachelipus rathkii, Armadillidium vulgare and Armadillidium zenckeri. The most characteristic species of the area are A. vulgare, T. rathkii, P. collicola and H. riparius. The composition of the isopod assemblage proved to be similar to that in the Hungarian part of the Drava lowland.
Uzorkovane jedinke svrstane su u 11 vrsta: Haplophthalmus danicus, Hyloniscus riparius, Platyarthrus hoffmannseggii, Cylisticus convexus, Porcellium collicola, Protracheoniscus politus, Trachelipus ratzeburgii, Trachelipus nodulosus, Trachelipus rathkii, Armadillidium vulgare i Armadillidium zenckeri.

The soil environment for Tuber magnatum growth in Motovun Forest, Istria
Važnost tla za rast bijelog tartufa (Tuber magnatum) u motovunskoj šumi, Istra

The mixed oak forest located near the town of Motovun is a well-known white truffle (Tuber magnatum Pico) producing area of the Istria region. Motovun Forest covers a 900-ha area in the fluvial plain of the Mirna River, which flows into the Adriatic Sea through a hilly landscape originating in a sedimentary sequence of a Triassic-Eocene carbonatic platform and Eocene-Oligocene Flysch turbidites. T. magnatum production has been decreasing in the last 10 years and a study was specifically performed in an attempt to explain this. Productive soils of the valley bottom were compared with unproductive soils on the slopes, the latter being drier, thinner and more developed than the former. T. magnatum carpophores are not found all over the fluvial plain and Motovun Forest was further subdivided into productive, unproductive and occasionally productive areas. All soils of the valley bottom were thick and continuously rejuvenated by the frequent arrival of fine sediments from slopes, but only unproductive ones were characterized by water saturation in some periods of the year. The soil comparison proved the need of T. magnatum for an alkaline, moist, very well drained and aerated soil environment. Moreover, soils suitable for T. magnatum should be neither too dry nor too moist. In Motovun Forest, the decrease in production has been taking place in conjunction with public works that have modified the hydraulic equilibrium of the area causing an overall drying of the forest soil.

The determination and taxonomic problems of palaeogene fossil macroflora from Slovenia and Croatia
Determinacijska i taksonomska problematika fosilne paleogenske makroflore iz Slovenije i Hrvatske

This paper discusses the complexity of the determination and taxonomy of Palaeogene fossil floras from Slovenia (village of Socka, north of Celje; Sava folds in Central Slovenia) and Croatia (Central Dalmatia – Mt Promina). One of the most important problems presented by the determination of individual species of fossil leaves is connected with the complex classification (species, genus and family) of traditional determinations of architecture and leaf morphology and also of cuticular studies. In this case, the problems are related to the determination of some fossil leaves and the morphological similarities inside some families, genera or species and among some families. This is related to conifers (Cupressaceae, Taxodiaceae, Araucariaceae), laurels (similarities among themselves and between some families), the families Myricaceae, Moraceae, Rhamnaceae, Proteaceae, Sapotaceae and »Leguminosae« type of leaves. In spite of these problems general palaeobotanical conclusions are very close to composition of classic Palaeogene palaeo-phytoassociations.
Članak ističe složenost determiniranja i taksonomsku problematiku uzoraka fosilne makroflore iz Socke i Posavskih bora (Slovenija) i šire okoline planine Promine (Hrvatska). Posebice je izražena problematika određivanja pojedinačnih uzoraka i njihovo pravilno svrstavanje (vrsta, rod, porodica), no unatoč svemu ne remeti se zaključak o ukupnom sastavu i karakteru fosilnih biljnih zajednica toga doba. Ovdje se ističe problematika određivanja pojedinih vrsta i njihove međusobne morfološke sličnosti, kako unutar samih porodica, rodova i vrsta, tako i između pojedinih vrsta. To se odnosi na fosilne četinjače (Cupressaceae, Taxodiaceae, Araucariaceae), lovore (međusobne sličnosti i sličnosti pojedinim drugim porodicama), porodice Myricaceae, Moraceae, Rhamnaceae, Proteaceae, Sapotaceae i lišće tzv. »leguminoznoga tipa«.

We investigated the preference of Cave molly males to associate with a receptive or a non-receptive female while body contact was prevented but water-borne cues were allowed to reach the male. Both in light and in darkness, males did not prefer the receptive female. Water-borne chemical cues (pheromones) seem to be absent or they are not detected/used by males, respectively.

The geochemical background in Istrian soils
Pozadinski geokemijski šum u tlima Istre
Z. Peh
S. Miko
D. Bukovec

geokemijski šum; površinski horizont tla; ishodišni materijal; geogeni utjecaj; antropogeni utjecaj; normalna raspodjela; raspon normalnih vrijednosti; Istra; Hrvatska
The geochemical background is postulated for two major groups of soils of the Istrian Peninsula, depending on the type of bedrock, or parent material as one of the main soil-forming factors. An effort is made to combine conceptual fundamentals of non-linear dynamic theory with the principles, methods and practical application of basic statistics in order to elucidate the nature and origin of elemental subpopulations hidden in the original geochemical data of Istrian topsoils. In this sense, the 4σ-outlier test and iterative 2σ-statistical technique are utilized, by which the outliers and anomalous values are removed from the total data set and assigned to the consequences of non-linear system dynamics, which prevents the development of a simple cause-and-effect relationship between geochemical variables. The geochemical background is then defined as the normal range of data of the remaining data set. As confirmed by the study, the carbonate-derived soils have a higher natural or geogenic baseline and are also more strongly loaded with heavy metals and other trace elements, in some places critically. On the other hand, flysch-derived soils, except for higher Ca contents, are actually depleted in many elements and also devoid of outliers. Such behaviour implies »dilution« due to the characteristic nature of the weathering of the underlying parent material and other soil-forming processes controlling their fate. In a general sense, the character of the probability distribution curves among chemical elements in the topsoil (or soils in general) can be used as reliable indicator of their evolutionary trends, that is, their enrichment or depletion, or, as regards the geochemical background, the equilibrium between the two, which in the case studied depends principally upon the contrasting Istrian bedrock lithology.

Marine fauna of the Mljet National Park (Adriatic Sea, Croatia). 3. Brachiopoda
Morska fauna Nacionalnoga parka Mljet (Jadransko more, Hrvatska). 3. Brachiopoda

morska fauna; Brachiopoda; Mljet; Jadransko more
Six brachiopod species (1 inarticulate and 5 articulates) are identified and briefly described from Mljet National Park. All are known from the Mediterranean Sea and eastern North Atlantic. The number of taxa is lower than that for the Adriatic Sea (11 species) as a whole, suggesting that further discoveries might be expected in Mljet. Megerlia truncata, usually found between 50–350 m elsewhere, occurs occasionally in shallow caves at one locality in the Park, supporting the »bathyal island« hypothesis advocated by French investigators in the Mediterranean.

Population growth of the grey heron in the River Krapina valley from 1992 until 2002 was followed. This area is a part of the village Mokrice (46°00’N, 15°55’E; Hrvatsko Zagorje region). While only 1 pair of grey herons nested in 1992, the number of nestings pairs gradually rose to 54 in 2002 (Pearson’s correlation coefficient: 0.98; p<0.001; n=11).

A phylogenetic analysis of partial 12S rRNA mitochondrial gene sequences from representatives of salamandroid families provided moderate support for the monophyly of the family Proteidae, comprising the North American genus Necturus and the European blind cave salamander Proteus.
Filogenetska analiza djelomičnih mitohondrijskih genskih sekvenci 12S rRNA predstavnika salamandroidnih porodica umjereno podržava monofiletičnost porodice Proteidae, obuhvaćajući sjevernoamerički rod Necturus i europski rod špiljske čovječje ribice Proteus.

ptice gnjezdarice; kvalitativni sastav; selo Mokrice i njegovo šire područje sa šumama, poljoprivrednim površinama i dr.; sjeverozapadna Hrvatska
We describe the qualitative community structure of birds nesting in and around the village of Mokrice (46°00'N, 15°55'E) over a period of twenty years (1971–2000). The Mokrice rural area (614 ha) was divided into three areas for this investigation: A-area (village itself), B-area (mainly forest and vineyards), and C-area (mainly meadows, arable land with small water areas and small isolated forests). A total of 74 nesting bird species were registered in all three areas. The studies showed that there was no significant difference in the qualitative structure of bird communities per nesting period (1971–1980, 1981–1990 and 1991–2000; Sorensen’s index of similarity: QS>80), but that there was a significant difference among nesting areas (A-area, B-area and C-area; QS<80).

In the years 1998, 1999 and 2000, samples were taken seasonally in the peat bogs of Lovren{ka jezera and [ijec. The purpose of the investigation was to establish the qualitative species structure and abundance of the periphyton and the phytoplankton. The paper presents the first complete algological research in this area. In the year 1999, some physical and chemical parameters were also measured. Altogether, 116 species and subspecies of algae were determined. Most of them belonged to Bacillariophyceae, followed by Conjugatophyceae and Cyanobacteria. 17 species and subspecies are new to Slovenia, most of them belonging to Bacillariophyceae.

Paleogene flora of Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina
Paleogenska fosilna flora Slovenije, Hrvatske i Bosne i Hercegovine
E. Jungwirth
paleogene; macroflora; paleo-phytoassociations; vegetation type
paleogen; makroflora; paleofitozajednice; tipovi vegetacije
Localities with Paleogene flora are situated in the NE and Central Slovenia, Istria and Central Dalmatia (Croatia) and SW Herzegovina (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Taxa are arranged in 87 families, 214 genera and 496 different species. Without doubt the composition of the paleo-phytoassociations indicates the paleotropic character of the determined flora (tropical-sub-tropical elements, holarctic elements, cosmopolitan and southern hemisphere elements). It was possible to position each locality in an adequate floristic complex: the localities Raša (Istria), Mt. Promina (Dalmatia) and those in the Herzegovina are situated in the Mediterranean Tethys bioprovince – Raša, Mt., Promina NW Herzegovina = Montebolca flororistic complex; Mt. Promina and NW Herzegovina also = Célas floristic complex. The locality Socka, and localities situated in the Sava folds are a part of the trans-European Paratethys bioprovince – Socka = Lábatlan floristic complex; Sava folds (Zagorje, Trbovlje, Novi Dol) = Kiscell floristic complex.
Lokalitet Socka i lokaliteti Posavskih bora bili su dijelovi Transeuropske paratetijske bioprovincije (Socka = Lábatlan floristički kompleks; Posavske bore /Zagorje, Trbovlje, Novi Dol/ = Kiscell floristički kompleks).

Sporobolus pungens (Schreber) Kunth is rare and endangered psammophytic plant species, with four localities in Croatia known to date, all on the central and south Dalmatian islands. In October 2001 a new locality was found on the island of Mljet, in Blaca Bay seashore sands, as a part of the psammo-halophytic community Echinophoro-Elymetum farcti (Ammophilion).

Cressa cretica L. (Convolvulaceae) in the flora of Croatia
Cressa cretica L. (Convolvulaceae) u flori Hrvatske

Cressa cretica (Convolvulaceae); Solaris (Šibenik); Hrvatska
According to VISIANI (1826: XVIII–XIX) Cressa cretica was found in the area of Dalmatia around the middle of the 16th century by Luigi Anguillara. Since later explorers of the flora of Dalmatia did not confirm this finding it only has a historical significance.
This thermo-cosmopolitan halophilous species from Convolvulaceae family was found in the salt marsh area of Blato by the Solaris hotels near Šibenik in June 1996. Observations that were made in period from 1997 to 2002 show that it is an annual plant with a short life cycle that continues in the summer period when the salt marsh area drains. It grows as a part of halophitic vegetation, mostly with the species Suaeda maritima, Salicornia europaea, Salsola soda, Limonium vulgare subsp. serotinum and Crypsis aculeata. With the exception of the locality of Blato by Solaris, Cressa cretica has not been found on any other locality in the wider area of Šibenik.

The flora research in Medvednica Nature Park has shown the presence of four species of the genus Impatiens: Impatiens balfourii Hooker f., I. glandulifera Royle, I. noli-tangere L. and I. parviflora DC. The species I. noli-tangere is the most widespread in the Park, while the other three species are registered for the first time. Distribution mapping was done by using the basic units of the Central European grid for floristic mapping (MTB).
Analizom rezultata dosadašnjih florističkih istraživanja, za područje Parka Prirode Medvednica utvrđene su četiri vrste roda Impatiens: Impatiens balfourii Hooker f., I. glandulifera Royle, I. noli-tangere
L. and I. parviflora DC.

The species was found in the town of Komiža (the island of Vis) in the spring of 2000 as well as on the island of Biševo in the spring of 2001. In both cases plants were found within ruderal vegetation. The species is extensively naturalized in the Mediterranean region and western Europe, but in Croatian flora it comes as an adventitious species.
U radu se iznose podaci o prvim nalazima vrste Oxalis pes-caprae L. u Hrvatskoj.

Genetic and morphological analyses of long-eared bats from Northern Ossetia and other Caucasian localities revealed that the sister clade of Plecotus auritus discovered in the Eastern Alps (SPITZENBERGER et al., 2001) and described as a new species by Spitzenberger (SPITZENBERGER et al., 2002) (Plecotus microdontus) and by KIEFER & VEITH (2002) (Plecotus alpinus) is conspecific with Plecotus macrobullaris Kuzyakin, 1965, described as a subspecies of P. auritus, from the vicinity of Vladikavkaz. The valid name for this species therefore is Plecotus macrobullaris. P. macrobullaris also occurs in central and eastern Turkey. Morphological as well as genetic analyses differentiate between an eastern and a western group within P. macrobullaris. From a morphological comparison of specimens of P. macrobullaris with the type specimens of Plecotus wardi from Kashmir we conclude that macrobullaris is not conspecific with wardi.
Morfološke i genetičke analize pokazuju razliku istočne i zapadne grupe unutar P. macrobullaris.

In 2002 specimens of Eptesicus nilssonii and Vespertilio murinus were caught in mist-nets in mixed forests of spruce, fir and beech in two localities on Mt Velebit. These are the first records in Croatia for 130 years for E. nilssonii, and for 68 years for V. murinus. Considering all the available data from Croatia and neighbouring countries, we discuss the possible status of these species in the mountain area of the Dinaric Alps. Although all the new findings were males caught in the migratory period (August and September) which indicates the possibility of hibernation in the karstic area of the Dinaric mountains, we do not exclude the possible existence of resident populations.

The paper presents the ornithofauna of the carp fish-ponds of Končanica and the surroundings. The research was conducted between the spring of 1985 and the autumn of 2001 The material comprises data on the registration and counting of individual species throughout the year. The investigation covered resident birds, summer visitors, winter visitors, passage migrants, regular vagrants and irregular vagrants. During approximately 3000 working hours, 170 bird species were recorded, of which there were 98 (57. 6%) species of breeding birds. The fish-ponds and the surrounding area are included in the migration routes of many bird species, particularly of the Anseriformes and Charadriformes. The European Threat Status is given for all the recorded species. Economic activities (agriculture, forestry, hunting), ongoing inside and outside the area of the fish-ponds, endanger the ornithofauna to a certain extent. The Končanica fish-ponds and the surrounding area are an exceptionally valuable ornithological locality, and as a result, should be proclaimed a protected area.
Materijal predstavljaju podaci registriranja i brojenja primjeraka pojedinih vrsta tijekom cijele godine. Ribnjaci i okolno područje uključeni su u migracijske putove mnogih vrsta ptica, poglavito patkarica (Anseriformes) i vivčarica (Charadriformes).

This paper presents a study of major and trace element distribution and an evaluation of their environmental geochemical aspects in the surface sediments of Vrana Lake and the topsoil within its catchment area. The concentrations of 22 elements were determined in 30 lake sediment samples and 60 topsoil samples covering the lake catchment area and the whole island of Cres. The element to Al ratios fall into three main groups: the group of elements that show no difference in ratios in soils and lake sediments: Ni, Co, Mn, Th, Zn, Ba, Ti, K, V, Na, and H; elements that are enriched in the sediments: Ca, Sr, Cd, Pb, Ba and Mg; and elements that are depleted in the lake sediments: Cu, P, Fe, Cr, and La. Long-range air pollution is probably the main reason why the content of metals, especially lead, is increased in the lake sediments, although a local source, from road transport, as indicated by soil data from the catchment area, could also be an important source of Pb. Some pollutants in the soils of the catchment area, such as Cu and Hg from agro-chemical sources, were not determined in elevated concentrations in the lake sediments. Comparison of element/Al indexes from this study with the other studies of surface materials in the region show mutually similar sources, with loess and flysch as two geochemical end-members.

SPITZENBERGER et al. (2001) reported the existence of more than two different genetic clades within long-eared bats in Austria. A genetic analysis of one specimen from the Dalmatian island of Lastovo (Croatia), close to the locus typicus of Plecotus kolombatovici, and an additional morphological analysis of specimens from some other Dalmatian islands revealed the fact that in contrast to the previous interpretation, clade 2 in SPITZENBERGER et al. (2001) does not represent P. kolombatovici, which is a separate species related to P. austriacus. Clade 2 has to be considered a new species, P. microdontus n. sp., which is the sister group of P. auritus. It is distinguishable in external, skull and teeth characters from other European Plecotus species. It is known from the Alps between Liguria and Slovenia.

Tectonic setting of recently found gypsum deposits of Mt. Medvednica (Northwestern Croatia)
Tektonski položaj novih nalaza gipsa na Medvednici (sjeverozapadna Hrvatska)

In this paper two newly discovered locations with gypsum on Mt. Medvednica and the structural-tectonic setting are described. The first location with gypsum is situated 2 km S of Marija Bistrica and is associated with dolomites and clastic rocks of Permo-Triassic age, which were during the most recent Neotectonic events, together with Miocene sediments, intensely folded and reverse faulted under the influence of the main stress, oriented N-W. At the other location, in the upper course of the Vidovec stream, gypsum is also found in dolomite, which is in direct discordant contact with black Palaeozoic metapelites. On samples from both locations, sulphur isotope analysis was performed and an Upper Perm to Lower Triassic age was determined. Based on the results of the sulphur analysis it is assumed that investigated localities were connected with an open marine area during the Upper Permian. Therefore, and indirect conclusion concerning the age of the metamorphic rocks of Mt. Medvednica can be made. That is, gypsum occurs in both locations in non-metamorphic dolomites of the Upper Permian age.

A mixed brood of nuthatch (Sitta europaea) and great tit (Parus major) species
Miješano leglo brgljeza (Sitta europaea) i velike sjenice (Parus major)
Z. Dolenec
mixed brood; nuthatch; great tit
miješano leglo; brgljez; velika sjenica
Mixed clutches occur when two or more species lay their eggs in the same nest. Among passerines, mixed clutches have often been recorded in hole nesting species, especially among the tits Parus sp. and the flycatchers Ficedula sp. (e.g. LÖHRL, 1964; SHY, 1982; MERILÄ, 1994; ZANG, 1998). In mid-May 2000 I found a mixed nuthatch and great tit clutch. Cases of nuthatch and great tit mixed clutch have been reported less often.

Terenske florne liste
Field floristic lists
T. Nikolić

flora; Hrvatska; MTB polje; terenska florna lista
flora; Croatia; MTB unit; field floristic list
Field floristic lists have been printed as a part of the project »Biological database and GIS II«. Their main purpose is to standardize procedures and methods in recording floristic data, in order to instruct different authors, professional botanists or educated amateurs to collect floristic data in the same way. Every floristic list is designed for gathering floristic data in well-defined area (one MTB ¼ unit for collecting data on national level).
Field floristic list enables faster and more organized fieldwork. It was created on the basis of similar lists that have been used since the 1960’s for the mapping of flora of Middle Europe. The list is made of 6 sheets (12 pages) of B5 format, all connected in a folding sequence. It contains a part for the input of geographical, ecological and other data about the researched area, a list of abbreviations of species names (in relation to the List of Croatian flora, reduced for species that are rarely found in the field) and auxiliary maps. This article describes in detail what a field floristic list is and what its parts are, how it is correctly filled out, where one can get it and what to do with a filled out list.

Differences in submerged and emergent eulittoral sediment biota of Lake Sakadaš (Kopački Rit Nature Park, Croatia)
Biotičke razlike u submerznom i emerznom sedimentu eulitorala Sakadaškog jezera (Park prirode Kopački rit, Hrvatska)

J. Vidaković

bakterije; praživotinje; meiofauna; eulitoral; jezero
Sediment granulometry, organic matter and moisture content in sediment were measured in an attempt to assess their importance for the structure of sediment biota (bacteria, protozoa, and especially, meiofauna) in the period between February and December 1998 at three eulittoral sites (submerged, at the land-water interface and emergent) of Lake Sakadaš in the Kopački rit Nature Park, Croatia.
Ten groups of meiofauna were recorded in total: Nematoda, Copepoda (incl. nauplii), Rotatoria, Oligochaeta, Gastrotricha, Cladocera, Tardigrada, Turbellaria, Acari and Insecta larvae. The relatively high number of meiofauna groups with a low abundance was the consequence of the physical and chemical characteristics of the study area, primarily of the sandy structure of sediment. Nematodes were the dominant group of meiofauna at all study sites.
At the submerged site a significant correlation existed between the organic matter in the sediment and the water level of Lake Sakadaš, between the organic matter and the moisture content in the sediment, and between the number of total bacteria and protozoa. At the land-water interface a significant correlation existed between the sediment moisture content and the total meiofauna and nematode abundance. At the same site, as well as at the emergent site, a correlation existed between the protozoa and meiofauna and between the protozoa and nematode abundances.

The flora of Šibenik and its surroundings
Flora Šibenika i okolice
M. Milović
flora analysis; Šibenik and surroundings; Croatia
analiza flore; Šibenik i okolica; Hrvatska
Investigations into the flora of Šibenik and its surroundings were carried out in the period from 1996 to 2001. A total of 1075 species and subspecies of Pteridophyta and Spermatophyta was found and 676 of them are reported for the first time in this paper. The findings of 399 taxa were confirmed among the 492 previously noted, but not confirmed for 93 taxa.
The results of the analysis of the flora show that Therophyta constitute a significant proportion of the flora (42.79%), as do plants of the Mediterranean floral element (37.86%) and also a significant presence of plants from the Leguminosae family (10.70%) which points to the Mediterranean character of flora of the investigated area.

In order to develop the floristic map of Medvednica Nature Park, already existing data on the distribution of the genus Daphne were collected from literature and herbarium sources. Field observations were also carried out. Three species were recorded: Daphne blagayana Freyer, Daphne laureola L. and Daphne mezereum L. All recorded species have the IUCN status of endangered or low risk species. For the three species of the genus Daphne in Medvednica Nature Park, 159 localities were found and 124 (78%) of the localities were geocoded. The distribution of the species is presented on maps using a Central European grid for floristic mapping (MTB).
