How do sound rhythms affect heartbeat: Comparison of linear and non-linear analyses of R-R intervals
Pavle Valerjev
Nataša Šimić
non-linear analyses; chaos; sound rhythms; heartbeat variability; Lyapunov exponent
A 2x3 within groups experiment with two levels of sound intensity and three levels of tempo of sound rhythm was conducted. Eleven psychology students participated in the study. SMI index, 1/f spectra slopes and some non-linear analyses parameters - correlation dimension and largest Lyapunov exponents - were used. Decrease in SMI indexes in low and medium spectral bands occurred with more intensive sound rhythms as a function of rhythm tempo increase which may point to increased stress and mental load. Spectral analysis showed no clear interference between sound and cardiac rhythm. Changes in 1/f spectra slopes were similar to those of SMI indexes. A decrease in correlation dimension for more intensive rhythms points to decrease of series dimensionality which is probably the result of domination of non-linear factors determining dynamic system. More evidence for such an interpretation was indicated by decrease in system predictability when exposed to sound rhythms, as shown by an increase in Lyapunov exponents.

The role of students' age, problem type and situational context in solving mathematical word problems

mathematical word problems; age; context
The aim of this research is to test the hypotheses regarding the importance of understanding situation in mathematical word problems that follow from Reusser’s Situation Problem Solver (SPS) model by exploring efficiency in children’s mathematical word problems solving as a function of age, problem type and situational context of the problem. Children of three age groups participated in the study: preschool kindergarten group (N=67), first grade (N=79) and second grade students (N=85). Testing was conducted by 20 specially trained senior psychology students. Two categories of word problems were used: change problems and compare problems. Every child was tested twice, one time with neutral context problems, and the other time with familiar context problems. Repeated measures analysis of variance was performed with age, situational context and problem type as independent variables and children’s performance as a dependent variable. All main effects were significant, as well as the interaction of age and problem type. The results indicate that older children are more successful than younger children in solving mathematical word problems and that the children’s performance on the change problems is better than performance on compare problems. Results also showed that children’s performance on the problems with familiar context was better than performance on the problems with neutral context. In both problem types performance of school children was better than performance of kindergarten children. These results confirm Reusser’s essential hypothesis that including additional sense to the problem text would facilitate designing the situational model of the problem.

nursing home; activities; contentedness; nurses; residents
This study aimed at (1) assessing activities and services offered by nursing homes, (2) estimating the residents' and the nurses' contentedness about the residents’ activities, and (3) finding out the residents' and nurses' wishes for alterations in the home routine. Based on the information of 255 residents and 171 nurses in eleven Austrian nursing homes our results showed that there was a great discrepancy of the values between the residents' and the nurses' view of an active daily life in the institution. While residents expressed the wish for more activities in the nursing homes, nurses wanted a facilitation of their care work.

Dynamics of two psychomotor activities: Chaotic properties
Ana Proroković
Ljiljana Gregov
nonlinear dynamics; psychomotor activity; dimensionality; predictability
The aim of this study was to find out whether observed time series of complex reaction time (CRT) and tapping intervals (TI) reflect nonlinear, chaotic dynamics of underlying cognitive and motor processes. Seven female subjects, aged between 19-25 participated in 2x2 within groups factor experiment (two levels of task difficulty and two types of performance; single and dual). Seven time series were observed: Four CRT series (single and dual performance of two primary tasks) and three TI time series (single performance and dual performance with two primary tasks. Analysis of CRT series and TI time series included calculation of various nonlinear parameters (correlation dimension, largest Lyapunov exponent), as well as an application of quantitative recurrence analysis (%determinism, divergence) and the surrogate data technique, for testing nonlinearity. The results indicated the existence of chaotic dynamics in human response time, as well as in tapping data. In general, it seems that increased task requirements (difficulty) caused a reduction in the dimensionality of CRT series, i.e. underlying system dynamics. It was also found that one of the nonlinear properties of the CRT series and TI time series was their sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Maximum Lyapunov exponents for CRT and TI time series were greater for more complex tasks, indicating deterministic and chaotic nature of undergoing cognitive and motor processes.

Sex differences in mate preferences: Testing some predictions from evolutionary theory
Meri Tadinac
Ivana Hromatko
mate preferences; sex differences; evolutionary psychology
Hypotheses of evolutionary psychologists concerning the mate choice and sex differences in preferred mate characteristics have been tested in various cultures. In this paper some of the basic assumptions that can be drawn from famous Trivers' theory of parental investment and sexual selection are tested on a Croatian sample. The theory predicts sex differences when it comes to choosing a mate due to different parental investment in offspring. Females are expected to be choosier than males and to seek a reliable partner who has the resources and is willing to invest them in potential offspring (in order to increase their survival), while males should mostly seek a healthy and reproductively capable partner. The basic assumptions derived from the theory received empirical support: men seek short-term mates more than women do; sex differences were found in rankings of desirability of certain characteristics of a potential mate, as well as in his/her preferred age; more men than women would express sexual vs. emotional jealousy.

Pupils’ reading motivation and teacher’s activities for enhancing it
Sonja Pečjak
Katja Košir
reading motivation; pupils; teacher; teacher’s activities
Numerous studies report the decrease of reading motivation in higher grades of elementary school, which can be considered as a big problem. Therefore, in our study we examined (1) what kind of activities teacher can use to maintain pupils’ reading motivation and if and to what degree teachers’ beliefs about the importance of reading and reading goals relate to their activities in the classroom and (2) what is the relationship between reading motivation, reading behaviour and reading achievements. 1178 seventh grade pupils and 67 Slovene teachers from 24 elementary school participated in the present study. The results show that teachers who highly value reading and find reading goals important read to their pupils, teach them how to use different reading strategies and use various reading materials more frequently. Such teacher’s behaviours have implications for pupils’ reading motivation. Activities that have the strongest effect on pupils’ extrinsic and intrinsic motivation and their competence are teacher’s teaching of reading strategies and frequency of reading in the classroom. Pupils who are more motivated for reading read more and more frequent and have better reading (academic) achievements.

Effects of extraversion and neuroticism on performance in Fitts Tapping tasks
Ana Slavić
Ilija Manenica
extraversion; neuroticism; psychomotor task; task difficulty; arousal; difficulty assessment
The aim of this study was to examine the differences in performance between extraverts and introverts, as well as between neurotic and stable subjects, in Fitts’ Tapping Task (FTT). Forty subjects classified into the four personality categories according to the EPI questionnaire (10 in each), performed twelve original FTT, with the task difficulty ranging from one to six bits.
The results showed the difference in performance between introverts and extraverts, but no differences were found between neurotic and stable subjects. Introverts achieved higher scores in easier tasks, while extraverts were better in more difficult tasks. The differences were attributed to summative effects of natural and task induced arousal, which resulted in an optimal level of cortical arousal in extraverts and hyper arousal in introverts at more demanding tasks. It was also found that stable introverts had the highest, and stable extraverts the lowest estimates of task difficulty assessment. Neuroticism, however, had no effects on the task difficulty.

Effects of setting creative goals of different specificity on judged creativity of the product
Irena Čorko
Andrea Vranić
creativity; goal-setting; consensual assessment technique
The study examined the effect of setting creative goals of different specificity on judged creativity of the product. Female psychology students (N=47) were divided in 3 groups. Experimental task was to make a collage. Groups differed in the level of specificity of the given goal. Collages were judged by 11 judges using the consensual assessment technique. Factor analysis of these judgments confirmed 2 orthogonal factors: creativity and technical goodness. Results show that setting a specific creative goal has positive effects on the creativity of the product. Setting creative goals of different specificity level did not have an effect on judged technical goodness. Results are interpreted in terms of the goal-setting theory.

How culture specific values relate to universal ones: Human value orientations assessed by the Austrian Value Questionnaire as compared to the Schwartz Value Survey
Walter Renner
Ingrid Salem
human values; culture; measurement; validity; SEM
The Austrian Value Questionnaire (AVQ), designed to assess culture specific values of Austrian society, was administered together with the Schwartz Value Survey (SVS), which claims to assess universal values, to a representative Austrian sample (N = 421). Principal Components Analysis (PCA) of both questionnaires confirmed that they measure distinct dimensions. Five factors represented values from the AVQ, 3 those from the SVS. In spite of different dimensionality, we expected that each of the AVQ scales would be able to predict specific SVS scales. By use of structural equation modeling, this hypothesis was confirmed for 3 of the 5 AVQ scales. The results indicate that culture specific and universal instruments measure separable, though overlapping, value constructs.

Dynamics of two psychomotor activities: linear aspects
Ljiljana Gregov
Ana Proroković
linear dynamics; psychomotor activity; spectral analysis; 1/f slope
Traditionally, variability in reaction time (RT) is usually interpreted as random error of measurement characterised as stochastic process. However, newer techniques (linear and nonlinear) have indicated that RT series may contain “hidden information” which is neither visually apparent, nor extractable with conventional methods of analysis. The aim of this study was to determine periodical changes in different psychomotor time series: complex reaction time (CRT) series and tapping intervals (TI) time series. A second aim was to examine whether the simultaneous performance of two psychomotor tasks showed interferention and as a result, changed the dynamical structure of underlying processes.
Seven female subjects, aged between 19-25 participated in the experiment. There were five different experimental situations. The experimental design was 2x2 within groups factor experiment, which included 2 levels of CRT task difficulty and 2 task types (single task as well as dual task referring to simultaneous performance of CRT and tapping task). In addition, subjects performed a simple tapping task as alone. The results of this study indicated the existence of some dominant frequencies (periodical changes) in CRT series, as well as in TI time series. Those periodicities could be related to some characteristics of task performance and also, to the exercise and rhythm of breathing. On the other hand, the results of spectral analysis indicated that those time series were not stationary. There was no match found between dominant frequencies in different time segments of CRT and TI time series, which implies difficulties in result interpretation.
However, Gilden et al. (1995) suggested that characteristics of 1/f spectrum could provide much more relevant information than conventional spectral analysis parameters (differentiation of cognitive component and motor component). The results of this study partly agreed with those of Gilden et al., in that the 1/f slopes were non-zero and negative. 1/f spectrum appears to have two components, a flat, white noise component for the high frequencies (motor component), and a negative slope for the low frequencies (cognitive component). Those slopes also depended on the task difficulty. Finally, the results have showed that dynamical structure (linear aspects) of CRT time series didn’t change during the simultaneous performance of two psychomotor tasks, while dynamical structure of TI time series changed significantly.

Psychosocial aspects of adolescents’ homosexual feelings in Croatia

homosexual feelings; adolescence; psychological adjustment
A survey was carried out on a sample of 3351 girls and 3041 boys ranging in age from 14 to 19 in four Croatian counties (Primorsko-goranska, Ličko-senjska, Istarska i Dubrovačko-neretvanska) to determine whether certain personality characteristics and general satisfaction with life accounted for the difference between boys and girls who had experienced a sexual attraction for members of the same sex. The results show that 13.3% of girls and 10.0% of boys in the population under review reported that they had experienced homosexual feelings. Adolescents who experience such feelings are more prone to depression, have psychosomatic symptoms more frequently, are more aggressive and seek attention and recognition from their peers more often. Their overall satisfaction with life is lower than those adolescents who have never encountered any homosexual feelings.

Continuity of motivation in higher education: A three-year follow-up study
Florian H. Müller
Marko Palekčić
motivation; higher education; follow-up study
This study investigates the question how the quality of students’ learning motivation changes within a period of 3 years. Of special interest is which conditions of the learning environment are responsible for the stability or respectively the change of learning motivation. Deci and Ryan’s (2002) self-determination theory (SDT) provides the theoretical foundation of this paper. It allows a differentiated analysis of the qualities of learning motivation (intrinsic motivation and four types of extrinsic motivation) and also suggests that motivational processes are highly influenced by basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence and social relatedness. On three different dates between 2003 and 2005, 104 students participated in a questionnaire. Overall, the longitudinal results show that the qualities of learning motivation remain relatively stable. In contrast, particularly the perceived support of autonomy and competence show a significant decline. The evaluation of social relatedness at university, between students and lecturers as well as between groups of students, remains stable on a high level during those three years. The social relatedness significantly correlates with learning motivation in all of the three assessments. The results are discussed in relation to situational and cultural conditions.

The effects of self-regulation techniques on human functional states: The moderating role of dominant sensory modality
Alla S. Kuznetsova
Valentina V. Barabanshchikova
self-regulation; human functional state (HFS); dominant sensory modality; imagery
The application of self-regulation techniques forms a long tradition in Russian work and organizational psychology. The recent research line in this domain focuses on the elaboration of multilevel health promotion programs that provide for efficient learning of self-regulation skills and enlarge individual repertoires of coping strategies. Obtained data allowed to extract two main principles of self-regulation programs’ adaptation: 1) taking into account the grade of fit between self-regulation means and the nature of human functional states’ (HFS) negative transformations in work process; 2) acceptance of individual sensitivity to various self-regulation means. An individualized approach in using self-regulation techniques promotes higher effectiveness in their application and can be considered as a promising way for improving HFS and human reliability in different work settings. This paper investigates dominant sensory modality of imagery as one of individual traits on which selection of the most adequate and individually efficient self-regulation technique depends.

bodybuilding; athletes; self-esteem; body image; athletic identity; personality
The aim of the research was to determine personality profile of Slovene bodybuilders. In this study we compared a group of 31 Slovene bodybuilders (31.6 %), a group of 36 Slovene elite individual athletes (36.7 %) and a group of 31 non-athletes (31.6 %). The following inventories were used: Personality questionnaire FPI 114, Tennessee scale of self-image and Athletic Identity Measurement Scale. Some significant differences were found among these participants. Bodybuilders scored lower on depression, irritability, suppression, sincerity and emotional instability. They also showed higher self-esteem scores (physical self, moral-ethical, personal and social self, they have a stronger identity, self-image, higher perceptions of suitability of behavior) than other elite athletes and non-athletes. Family self was well expressed in both groups of athletes. Bodybuilders described themselves as less honest and less critical about themselves, which attributes them a defensive orientation and probably protects from criticism and feelings of inferiority.

Group size, power allocation, and change: Effects on conceptual representations of group interaction
Radmila Prišlin
P. Niels Christensen
Elizabeth Jacobs
majority; minority; social power; social change; conceptual representation; inclusiveness
This study examined conceptual representations of interactions between stable and changed minority and majority factions within groups that allocated power either according to size (power = size) or randomly. In support of the hypothesized moderating effect of power allocation, it was found that both stable and changed minority and majority factions represented their interactions at low levels of inclusiveness when power was allocated according to size. When, however, power was not associated with size, stable majorities, but not stable minorities, represented group interactions at the inclusive level of a single group. Loss of the majority position significantly decreased this inclusive level of representation but gain of the majority position did not result in the corresponding increase. Nevertheless, the new majority in the random power condition represented its interaction with others at a significantly higher level of inclusiveness than did the new majority in the “power = size” condition. These results suggest that associating power with size invariably places interactions between the majority and the minority into the inter-group domain. Dissociating power from size, however, places such interactions within the intra-group domain for the stable majority and creates a potential for a similar socio-categorical structuring for the new majority (former minority).

The sources of stress and coping styles as mediators and moderators of the relationship between personality traits and physical symptoms
Jasna Hudek-Knežević
Igor Kardum
Barbara Kalebić Maglica
sources of stress; coping styles; personality traits; physical symptoms
In order to better understand the relationship between stress and coping, it is important to understand and explain how and why, as well as when, and under what conditions the effects of various antecedent variables exert their effects on adaptational outcomes. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the mediating and moderating effects of various sources of stressful events and coping styles between dimensions of the five-factor model of personality and perceived frequency of physical symptoms. These problems were examined in a representative sample of 948 students from the fifth to the eight grade of elementary school.
The results of hierarchical regression analyses show that stressful events connected to relationships with teachers and parents/family significantly moderate the effects of neuroticism on physical symptoms. The frequency of physical symptoms increases more as a function of stress intensity connected to relationships with teachers in adolescents high in neuroticism than in emotionally stable adolescents, while an increase in stress intensity connected to relationships with parents/family increases the frequency of physical symptoms more in emotionally stable adolescents. When considering coping styles, only problem-focused coping moderates the effect of neuroticism on physical symptoms, so that in emotionally stable individuals an increase in problem-focused coping is related to a decrease in physical symptoms, while in individuals high in neuroticism it is related to an increase of the frequency of physical symptoms.
The results of two path analyses show that stressful events partly mediate the effects of neuroticism, conscientiousness, extraversion and openness/intellect on the frequency of physical symptoms. Regarding coping styles, emotion-focused coping partly mediates the effect of extraversion, and avoidance coping the effect of neuroticism on physical symptoms.

Ethnic identification and outgroup attitudes in minority and majority groups
Marianna Kosic
Corrado Caudek
ethnic identification; outgroup attitudes; minority groups; majority groups
According to Social Identity Theory, ingroup identification leads to negative outgroup attitudes. According to multi-cultural theory, instead, a stronger ethnic identity should favor acceptance of other groups. Here we studied the relation between ethnic identification (in minority vs majority groups) and outgroups attitudes. In particular, we focused on the emotional reactions towards the opening of a national border due to the enlargement of Slovenia in the European Union. By examining questionnaires from 168 Slovene and 134 Italian majority group students, and 110 Slovene minority students aged 16-19, we found that participants of the majority groups with high ingroup identification reported more negative responses towards the outgroups than participants with lower ethnic identification. For the minority group, conversely, a higher level of identification was associated to more positive attitudes towards the outgroups.

Stability of attachment styles across students’ romantic relationships, friendships and family relations
Željka Kamenov
Margareta Jelić
adult attachment; various types of close relationships; attachment style
Research on adult attachment focused mainly on the relationship with partners. However, attachment theory predicts that attachment style once formed in childhood defines the structure and quality of later relationships to significant others, which means not only partners, but also friends and family members. We were interested in finding out whether the type of relationship is a relevant variable and whether the incidence of a particular attachment style differs with regard to the type of close relationship. The aim of our study was to assess the stability of attachment styles across students’ romantic relationships, friendships and family relations.
The sample consisted of 210 male and female undergraduate students of the University of Zagreb. The Experiences in Close Relationship Inventory developed by Brennan, Clark, and Shaver (1998) was administered to the participants. In order to assess the level of attachment toward other objects (friends and family members), the instrument was slightly modified. Data were analyzed and interpreted both according to their position on attachment dimensions and the type of attachment they indicate.
The results show that people form a more secure attachment in their relations with members of their families and friends than with their romantic partners. We investigated whether there is a correspondence between attachment styles in different types of close relationships. The only style that appears relatively stable is secure attachment. The non-secure attachment styles with romantic partners are highly compensated for with the secure one in other, less threatening relationships, with friends or family members. The results are discussed in relation to the age of participants and the characteristics of students’ life-style.

The impact of self-handicapping strategies use on the impression formation
Irena Hip-Fabek
impression management; self-handicapping; impression formation; causal attribution
Self-handicapping is usually defined as any claim, action or choice of performance setting that enhances the opportunity to externalize (or excuse) failure and to internalize (accept credit for) success. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of using different self-handicapping strategies on formation of the impression about the person. We collected data from 365 participants, whose task was to read a story about the person who failed on the task delegated to him/her, and to appraise that person using a set of items. The type of self-handicapping strategy (self-reported internal, self-reported external, behavioural internal, behavioural external, without self-handicapping) was varied between participants.
The results revealed a negative impact of using behavioural self-handicapping on the impression of the actor, especially in the case of behavioural internal self-handicapping. On the other hand, self-reported external self-handicapping emerged as a very efficient strategy for positive self-presentation, while self-reported internal self-handicapping had some positive and some negative effects. Generally, the impact of some self-handicapping strategy was negative to the extent to which the reason for failure was perceived as internal, controllable and stable. The results were discussed in the context of distinction between behavioural and self-reported self-handicapping strategies.

Professionals’ characteristics, victim’s gender, and case assessments as predictors of professional judgments in child protection
Ninoslava Pećnik
Elinor Brunnberg
child abuse; child protection; professional judgements; vignette
Scant research on child protection professionals' decision-making demonstrates complexity of identifying and responding to child maltreatment. In order to understand processes involved in professionals’ judgements, methodological approaches are needed which allow that multiple potentially relevant factors are evaluated. A technique of vignettes was used in this study of 87 Croatian and 72 Swedish social workers. The first aim was to investigate if professional’s individual characteristics and experiences and their social welfare system/culture were related to professionals’ reactions to a case of alleged child abuse depicted in a vignette. Results showed that age, parenthood status, length of professional experience, frequency of corporal punishment and bruises in childhood and a country of residence correlated with particular variables from the domain of case assessments and judgements about appropriate interventions. The second aim was to determine the relative contributions of professionals’ characteristics, victim’s gender and case assessments to explaining differences in judgements about appropriateness of removing a child from home compulsorily and maintaining a child at home with social support being offered. Female gender of the abused child, perceptions of father’s violence, previous judgements about appropriate interventions and assessment of risk and main problem/s at the final stage predicted judgements about removing a child from home.

Self-report measure of attitude functions: instrumental attitudes towards condom use and value-expressive attitudes towards voting?
Renata Franc
Tihana Brkljačić
instrumental attitude function; value-expressive attitude function; social-adjustive attitude function
This study presents an attempt to develop and validate a direct self-report measure of instrumental, value-expressive and social adjustive attitude function. Participants were two samples of university student (N = 442) and we used two specific attitude objects e.g. “voting” and “condom use”. Factor analyses conducted on two different samples and with two different attitude objects revealed congruent factor solutions, suggesting a reliable and replicable expected three-factor structure. In addition, resulted scales have satisfactory high reliability. A two multiple regression analyses with the general attitude score as the dependent variable and a three attitude functions scores as predictors, revealed that that instrumental function is only important predictor of attitude towards condom use, while value-expressive function is solely important predictor of attitude towards voting. More compelling evidence for the validity of the scales would be provided if it were shown that scales could differentiate between instrumental, value-expressive and social adjustive attitudes that were newly established with an experimental manipulation or are sensitive for attitude function salience manipulation related to existing attitudes.

Ethnic identity, academic achievement, and self-esteem among Mexican-American university students
Pamela Brouillard
Mark G. Hartlaub
ethnic identity; academic achievement; self-esteem; university students
This study examines the relationship between ethnic identity, academic achievement, and self-esteem among a sample of Mexican-American students at a predominantly European-American university. Mexican-American students reported a significantly stronger sense of ethnic identity relative to European-American students on a standardized measure of ethnic identity (Phinney, 1992). High scores on the ethnic identity measure were significantly correlated to a measure of self-esteem for both Mexican-American students and European-American students, but did not predict academic achievement for either group as measured by overall grade point average when sex and age were controlled for. Results and implications for the meaning of ethnic identity in a multi-cultural society are discussed as well as directions for future research.
