eng European survey on preanalytical sample handling – Part 2: Practices of European laboratories on monitoring and processing haemolytic, icteric and lipemic samples. On behalf of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Working Group for the Preanalytical Phase (WG-PRE)
Cadamuro, Janne; Lippi, Giuseppe; von Meyer, Alexander; Ibarz, Mercedes; van Dongen – Lases, Edmee; Cornes, Michael; Nybo, Mads; Vermeersch, Pieter; Grankvist, Kjell; Guimaraes, Joao Tiago; Kristensen, Gunn B.B.; de la Salle, Barbara; Simundic, Ana-Maria
Biochemia Medica Vol. 29, No. 2, 2019
Introduction: No guideline currently exists on how to detect or document haemolysis, icterus or lipemia (HIL) in blood samples, nor on subsequent use of this information. The EFLM WG-PRE has performed a survey for assessing current practices of European laboratories in HIL monitoring. This second part of two coherent articles is focused on HIL. Materials and methods: An online survey, containing 39 questions on preanalytical issues, was disseminated among EFLM member countries. Seventeen questions exclusively focused on assessment, management...

eng European survey on preanalytical sample handling – Part 1: How do European laboratories monitor the preanalytical phase? On behalf of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Working Group for the Preanalytical Phase (WG-PRE)
Cadamuro, Janne; Lippi, Giuseppe; von Meyer, Alexander; Ibarz, Mercedes; van Dongen – Lases, Edmee; Cornes, Michael; Nybo, Mads; Vermeersch, Pieter; Grankvist, Kjell; Guimaraes, Joao Tiago; Kristensen, Gunn B.B.; de la Salle, Barbara; Simundic, Ana-Maria
Biochemia Medica Vol. 29, No. 2, 2019
Introduction: Compared to other activities of the testing process, the preanalytical phase is plagued by a lower degree of standardization, which makes it more vulnerable to errors. With the aim of providing guidelines and recommendations, the EFLM WG-PRE issued a survey across European medical laboratories, to gather information on local preanalytical practices. This is part one of two coherent articles, which covers all practices on monitoring preanalytical quality except haemolysis, icterus and lipemia (HIL). Materials and methods: An onlin...

Biochemia Medica Vol. 32, No. 3, 2022
IntroductionLaboratory plays important part in screening, diagnosis, and management of thyroid disorders. The aim of this study was to estimate current laboratory preanalytical, analytical and postanalytical practices and policies in Croatia. Materials and methodsWorking Group for Laboratory Endocrinology of the Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine designed a questionnaire with 27 questions and statements regarding practices and protocols in measuring thyroid function tests. The survey was sent to 111 medical bioche...

eng ‘Why has economics turned out this way?’ A socio-economic note on the explanation of monism in economics
Heise, Arne
Economic science has – lamented by some, applauded by others – turned into a monistic discipline. In this short research note, a socio-economic answer to the question of why this has happened is provided by combining an economic approach to the market for economic ideas with a sociological approach to a scientific (power) field.

eng Blood gas testing and related measurements: National recommendations on behalf of the Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine
Dukić, Lora; Milevoj Kopčinović, Lara; Dorotić, Adrijana; Baršić, Ivana
Biochemia Medica Vol. 26, No. 3, 2016
Blood gas analysis (BGA) is exposed to risks of errors caused by improper sampling, transport and storage conditions. The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) generated documents with recommendations for avoidance of potential errors caused by sample mishandling. Two main documents related to BGA issued by the CLSI are GP43-A4 (former H11-A4) Procedures for the collection of arterial blood specimens; approved standard – fourth edition, and C46-A2 Blood gas and pH analysis and related measurements; approved guideline – second editi...

Biochemia Medica Vol. 29, No. 1, 2019
Introduction: Standardization is the ability to obtain interchangeable results leading to same medical interpretation. External quality assessment (EQA) is the main support of the on-going harmonization initiatives. Aim of study was to evaluate results obtained from two years category 1 EQA program experience in Spain and determine the impact of applying this type of EQA program on the analytical standardization. Materials and methods: According to the analytical method, traceability and instrument different groups were established which res...

eng Estimation of the measurement uncertainty and practical suggestion for the description of the metrological traceability in clinical laboratories
Rigo-Bonnin, Raúl; Díaz-Troyano, Noelia; García-Tejada, Laura; Marcè-Galindo, Albert; Valbuena-Asensio, Míriam; Canalias, Francesca
Biochemia Medica Vol. 31, No. 1, 2021
Clinicians request a large part of measurements of biological quantities that clinical laboratories perform for diagnostic, prognostic or diseases monitoring purposes. Thus, laboratories need to provide patient’s results as reliable as possible. Metrological concepts like measurement uncertainty and metrological traceability allow to know the accuracy of these results and guarantee their comparability over time and space. Such is the importance of these two parameters that the estimation of measurement uncertainty and the knowledge of metrologi...

eng Some Reflections on Conventions
Penco, Carlo; Vignolo, Massimiliano
Croatian Journal of Philosophy Vol. 19, No. 57, 2019
In Overlooking Conventions Michael Devitt argues in defence of the traditional approach to semantics. Devitt’s main line of argument is an inference to the best explanation: nearly all cases that linguistic pragmatists discuss in order to challenge the traditional approach to semantics are better explained by adding conventions into language, in the form of expanding the range of polysemy or the range of indexicality (in the broad sense of linguistically governed context sensitivity). In this paper, we discuss three aspects of a draft of Devitt...

bos Standardizacija – jedinstvena spona za cijeli svijet
eng Standardization - unique bond for the whole world
Filatov, Nataša
Bosniaca Vol. 21, No. 21, 2016

eng A Century of Antivenom
Lovreček, Dijana; Tomić, Siniša
Collegium antropologicum Vol. 35, No. 1, 2011
Because it primarily affects the poor in undeveloped parts of the world where medical care is often inadequate and insufficient, envenomation is considered a neglected public health issue, despite the existence of antivenom therapy for more than a century. This article provides an overview of the epidemiological situation for important venomous animals, together with achievements in the production, control, technological progress and safety of antivenoms since their discovery.
