Endogenous protein C levels are frequently decreased in septic patients, probably due to increased conversion to activated protein C. Protein C levels inversely correlate with morbidity and mortality of septic patients regardless of age, infecting microorganisms, presence of shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation, degree of hypercoagulation, or severity of illness. Taken together, these considerations suggest a strong correlation between protein C pathways and survival from severe sepsis/septic shock, and reinforce the rationale for the...

eng STRESS AND BURNOUT SYNDROME AND THEIR ASSOCIATIONS WITH COPING AND JOB SATISFACTION IN CRITICAL CARE NURSES: A LITERATURE REVIEW
Friganović, Adriano; Selič, Polona; Ilić, Boris
Psychiatria Danubina
Vol. 31, No. suppl. 1, 2019

eng Pneumococcal meningitis in adult patients admitted to the Intensive care unit : prognostic factors of clinical outcome
Jana, Krastina; Sigita, Kazune
Liječnički vjesnik
Vol. 142, No. Supp 5, 2020
Introduction
Acute bacterial meningitis is a rapidly progressive bacterial infection of the meninges and subarachnoid space, that can lead to death or long-term disability. Pneumococcal meningitis, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae remains a potentially devastating disease that carries high mortality
and morbidity rates in spite of availability of effective antibiotics, vaccination programmes and skilled acute-care facilities.

eng POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER AFTER COVID-19 INTENSIVE CARE ADMISSION: CHARACTERISTICS AND PERSPECTIVES
Claus, Lukas; Berends, Kinge; De Waele, Elisabeth; van den Ameele, Seline; Crunelle, Cleo L.; Vanderbruggen, Nathalie
Psychiatria Danubina
Vol. 34, No. 3, 2022
An increase of psychopathology such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is described in patients affected with COVID-
19 that stayed at an intensive care unit (ICU). However, data on follow-up and on impact of contextual factors are limited. In a
single-center, observational study, PTSD symptomatology was prevalent among 38% of participants (n=8), persisting in clinical
PTSD in 2 participants after one year. In patients with initial PTSD symptoms, scores on depression, anxiety and insomnia sca les
were significantly higher. A higher me...

eng Post-intensive care syndrome – how to recognize, prevent, and treat it
Djak, Vedrana; Režić, Slađana
Sestrinski glasnik
Vol. 27, No. 2, 2022
Kognitivna oštećenja uključuju oštećenja pamćenja, poteškoće u izvršavanju funkcija, jezika, pažnje i vizualno-prostornih sposobnosti. Depresija, anksioznost i posttraumatski stresni poremećaj najčešća su ment...

eng Sepsis Syndrome in Croatian Intensive Care Units: Piloting a National Comparative Clinical Database
Gašparović, Vladimir; Gornik, Ivan; Ivanović, Dragutin
Croatian Medical Journal
Vol. 47, No. 3, 2006
Aim: To assess the incidence of sepsis in selected intensive care units (ICUs) in Croatia, isolates from blood cultures, and sepsis outcomes and to compare the results with those from other European countries.
Methods: In the pilot phase of the national comparative clinical database project, we included 24 ICUs – general, specialized, neonatal, pediatric, and adult – 18 from university hospitals, three from county hospitals, and four from city hospitals. By retrospective chart review, trained data collectors abstracted the data on the case mix...

eng Preoperative management of hypoplastic left heart syndrome
DESSARDO, SANDRO; Ahel, VLADIMIR
Signa vitae
Vol. 4, No. 2, 2009
Pediatricians are frequently involved in the care of cyanotic newborns in the labor and delivery room, as well as in the well baby nursery. Causes of hypoxia and cyanosis in the term newborn can be found within all physiological systems. Congenital heart structural diseases account for the largest diagnostic category. There have been significant advances during the past years in the diagnosis and treatment of neonates with critical congenital heart disease, especially in the field of pre- and post-operative intensive care.
The term hypoplast...

Vol. 6, No. 2, 2011
Introduction. Fluid overload and a positive fluid balance are common in the intensive care unit (ICU). Furosemide is frequently administered to increase urine output. A bolus injection is the traditional mode of administration, but many concerns have been raised about possible intravascular volume fluctuations, toxicity and enhanced tolerance. Furosemide related adverse effects can be enhanced in critically ill patients. Continuous infusion should allow better hemodynamic stability, less side effects and an easier achievement of the desired diu...

eng The impact of interventions to improve adherence to preventive measures on the incidence of nosocomial infections in ICUs

Vol. 9, No. Suppl. 1, 2014
Half of all life-threating nosocomial infections occur in intensive care units (ICUs) and, despite the advances in intensive
care, the incidence of nosocomial infections is still high. About one third of nosocomial infections are considered preventable.
Awareness of risk factors, adherence to preventive measures and collaboration of all members participating in preventive
programmes can lead to reduction of the incidence of nosocomial infections and thus can produce a positive impact on
reducing morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. A...
