Sažetak

This work tries to bring to life the biography of academic Mirko Malez, based on the few documents and photographs of the family, originating from his childhood and youth and from recollections of his sister and friends. The article pictures his life in hometown Ivanec from 1924 until his leaving in 1948 to start studying geology at the Faculty of Science in Zagreb. The family of Matilda and Slavko Malez and their six children lived modestly, almost in poverty, which was a common destiny between the two wars. Despite the lack of means, by living modestly and working hard the family managed to raise and school their many children who all succeeded later in life. It is not known when exactly Mirko Malez started elementary school. But we can with great certainty presume that it was in 1931. In 1939 he started his apprenticeship as electrician and machinist at the Croatian mines ltd. – Wood coal mine in Ivanec. During his schooling and apprenticeship, Mirko and his friends spend their time exploring the surroundings of Ivanec – its nature, plants, animals, ground, caves and prehistoric sites. In autumn 1945 his long-time wish comes true and he starts the fifth grade in Varaždin grammar school and completes the sixth grade during 1945 / 46 academic year. During 1947 /48 he completed seventh and eighth grades and takes his finals. Hence he achieved his long term goal – study of geology at the Faculty of Science in Zagreb.
