Hungaria coelestis (1741), an Astronomy Textbook by the Promotor of Modern Sciences Mihael Lipšić from Gradišće

Sažetak
The author depicts the life and work of a Croat Jesuit from Gradišće, Mihael Lipšić (Lipsics, 1703–1765). Bringing up to date his first Lipšić survey of twelve years ago, in which he had drawn attention to his works, in this paper the author describes Lipšić’s work as a professor in various towns in Hungary, Slovakia, and Croatia, and the two of his scientific works, on mathematics and physics, respectively (Algebra, 1739; Statica, 1740), the first ones in Hungary that had included the most recent contemporary results of natural sciences. The author also presents a short survey of the astronomical work of the Croatian Jesuits until the first half of the 18th century. The author proceeds to present the hitherto unknown Lipšić’s astronomy text-book Hungaria coelestis (1741), the first to describe the Hungarian reception of the contemporary astronomical discoveries, thus making Lipšić the first author of the then modern astronomy and chronology. In the appendices, the author adds the original texts of the forewords and the contents of both the Algebra and the Hungaria coelestis.
