Sažetak

The novel Baba Yaga Laid an egg at the same time represents the genre shift, and its poetic constant in the literary opus of Dubravka Ugrešić. The poetics of postmodernist rewriting of so called »lower« popular literary genres (such as detective and love stories) is in this novel spread through realms of folk and folklore imaginations. This paper deals with the typological determinants of this novel–fairy tale, determining the relationship between quotes and traditional forms of fairy tales, myths and folk stories, but it also deals with fantasy, autobiographical, and with oral literature in general. Inter discourse, parody, rewriting and ludic playing with conventional romanesque patterns, pluralism of discourse and self referencing are observed above all as discourse strategies of Ugrešić’s specific narrative style. Through stylistic analysis, we shall try to determine on which motivational, linguistic and discourse interventions the romanesque rewriting of a canonized genre is based, and what are the characteristics of quote relations which the novel determines with its proto texts: fairy tales, myths, autobiography and scientific discussion.
