Sažetak

Tourism as one of the most distinct modern global socio-economic phenomena according to the quantitative indicators, is gradually approaching the figure of billions of participants, its economic effects exceeding 800 billion USD. These values are almost tripled if domestic tourist migrations are taken into consideration, giving it an even more impressive social and economic dimension.
Already in the 1970-ies the UN experts announced that there are three key problems the mankind was facing at the time and in the near future – lack of energy, food and drinking water, which is of particular importance in relatively dry areas. Consequently, rational management of water resources has become one of the priorities for survival of civilization.
These observations resulted in engagement of numerous international bodies and organisations under the auspices of the UN (UNEP, UNESCO, FAO, IUCN ...) or other international regional organisations (OECD, EU, ETC. ...) including the increasing number of environmental organisations and associations worldwide, and rerouting of international and national policies and legislations for preservation and rational utilisation of water.
Recent modern recycling technologies enable the otherwise scarce amounts of fresh water to be spared by conditioning, turning waste water into industrial water suitable for use in industry, agriculture, tourism and municipal services, having in mind the reduced water discharge due to global warming.
These very processes enable the Mediterranean countries, as well as Israel, California, Nevada, Australia and other countries and regions threatened by draught, to ensure rational management of their drinking water resources turning their semi-desert and desert areas into fertile agricultural areas with rich yields. Organic fertilizers as a by-product in the process of recycling waste waters contribute to this process.
