Sažetak

This article analyzes the legal and military aspects of the naval blockade imposed by Israeli Defence Forces during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon confl ict. Shortly after Hezbollah's armed attack on the IDF patrol near the Israel-Lebanon border IDF started a military operation, called “The Change of Direction”. The authors describe chronology of this confl ict. Operation Change Direction lasted for 43 days and caused numerous civilian casualties and refugees on both sides, but did not achieve the primary goal. In this operation Hezbollah ability to perform rocket attacks on the north-western Israel was only partially destroyed and the IDF did not turn on the Lebanese public against Hezbollah. Although this confl ict was led mainly by the air forces the IDF also declared and imposed a full naval blockade on Lebanese coast. This is the first time in recent history that one party to the confl ict explicitly used the term “naval blockade”, which automatically implies the existence of the state of armed confl ict. After analyzing the blockade, it was found that the blockade achieved goals. This blockade destroyed the Lebanese economy and forced the international community to engage naval forces for the control of maritime traffic in front of Lebanese coast.
