Sažetak

The article primarily gives a brief historical overview of the attitude of the present-day Đakovo-Osijek Archdiocese towards the means of social communication. The aim was to point out that there is indeed a long tradition of respect and high valuation of the significance of these means for the evangelizing mission of this local Church. The Second Diocesan Synod of Đakovo and Srijem reached conclusions along similar lines, which particularly point out the effectiveness of the means of social communication in the spreading of the Gospel to the modern man and the need for their stronger presence in the pastoral work, as well as the necessity of continuing education, especially for laypeople, in quality and professional use of these means and their presence in the world of media. The second part of the article presents the results of a survey, conducted during the month of July, 2011, on various forms of use of the means of social communication in pastoral work, as well as the forms of cooperation between the parish communities of Đakovo-Osijek Archdiocese and the world of media. 72 out of 153 parishes answered the questionnaire (47%), and in the light of the results, the article shows the status of parish communities regarding the publishing of parish papers, the issuing of parish newsletters, the setting up of parish web-sites, and broadcasting of religious radio programs. In addition, the article shows the situation with regard to the (non)cooperation with other media, the creating of their own media projects, the appointing of parish correspondents, as well as the (non)presence of the Catholic press in the parishes of the Đakovo-Osijek Archdiocese. The general conclusion is that there is significant improvements, but still insufficient, because, of 72 parishes that participated in the survey, only 29 publish a parish paper, only 13 issue a parish newsletter, only 27 have set up a web-page, and there are only 4 regularly broadcast religious radio shows. In 24 parish communities, out of the total responses received, there is no form of use of such means of social communication in pastoral work. Furthermore, cooperation with other media is mostly done on occasion and is more pervasive in print than in electronic media. On the other hand, the church media is dominated more by informative than evangelizing content. The end of the article, based on the analysis of the results of the study, gives out some general conclusions and points out the need for a better evaluation of the significance of the world of media in the evangelizing mission of the Church, and the importance of education for media, as well as certain concrete possibilities with regard to more active involvement in the world of the means of social communication.
