The Beginnings of Puppetry in Zadar

In this paper, the author addresses the issue of the active operation of Zadar Puppet Theatre in the period between its founding in 1951 and its professionalisation in 1963. The first decade of puppetry in Zadar marks the work of its founder – stage manager and actor Bruno Paitoni, who had brought the guignol puppet directly from Paris to Zadar and organised puppet shows for the children of Zadar primarily for didactic reasons. Actors, stage managers, stage designers and musicians from the National Theatre, who had participated in shows as actors, stage managers or newspaper reviewers, had been involved in the establishing of Zadar Puppet Theatre. The author analyses specific staging, dramaturgical and puppet-master qualities of the puppet shows known under the name of “Gatara’s school”; she further mentions the first stage designs at Zadar Puppet Theatre, the first posters and the first acknowledgements the Theatre had received at its guest appearance in Rome. The conflict that arose between the founder and stage manager Paitoni and his team marked the end of a period; however, it also marked the beginning of new relations and new poetics at Zadar Puppet Theatre.
