INSTRUMENTS OF ASSESSMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS – POSSIBILITIES OF APPLICATION IN CASES OF PROBATION FOR MINORS

This paper presents some aspects of the application of instruments for assessment of the children and adolescents, with special regard to the assessment of criminological risks and needs for sanctioning juvenile criminal offenders, while emphasizing the possibility of applying the instruments in the selection and evaluation of the educational measure Increased care and surveillance.
The paper provides a brief overview of the development of the process of diagnosing criminological risks and needs, as well as basic approaches and concepts. Five instruments that are nowadays used in the world, out of which some are also used in Croatia, have been described. These are as follows: (1) The form for the assessment of risk/needs (Hoge, R.D., Andrews, D. A.); (2) The scale of psychopathic characteristics: the version for the young (Hare, R.); (3) The scale for the assessment of the behaviour of the children aged 6 to 18 and Self-assessment of the behaviour of the young (Achenbach, T. M.); (5) Massachusetts scale of triage of the young (Grisso, T., Barnum, R.). Apart from the overview of their metrical characteristics, the possibilities for the application of the aforementioned instruments for the purposes of the classification of juvenile delinquents and the differentiation of the treatment have been discussed.
