The museum library and the local community – examples from practice

Sažetak
The Museum library of the County Museum Našice was established in 1999. In addition to collecting professional literature for the museum workers and museum collections, we also collect, preserve, research, and exhibit all kind of materials concerning the territorial competence of the Museum. So, along with the library’s materials, we also collect related museum and archive materials as a part of the local heritage.
In addition to collecting the local heritage, the library is trying to initiate cooperation with the local residents. This cooperation has resulted in organising various activities in order to raise awareness of the importance of the local heritage, as ell as to encourage the citizens to collect local heritage material. Thus the collected material becomes unique because it is the result of the cooperation with the local people and institutions that provide the necessary assistance in reconstructing and documenting life in local communities. The community is not only a theme, but also a source of collecting items and information.
Through the selected examples of cooperation of the Museum library and the local community, we attempted to show the importance of the library in the study and preservation of the local heritage, because the heritage represents the foundation of both identity and values of the local community. The library materials, together with the local objects of the museum, contribute to the more systematic reconstruction and documentation of life in the local community. Thus the library promotes the relationship between the library, the museum and the local community. It actively supports the efforts of the museum to become a documentary, information and exhibition centre of the local attractions.
