Hospital libraries and children’s hospital schools in Zagreb

Sažetak
The paper discusses the importance of hospital treatment in the health care of children, treatment regulations, and the study Children’s Hospital Schools in the town of Zagreb. Although the first children’s hospital was established in Paris in 1802, the 20th century is marked as the century of the child, because many regulations that regulate children’s rights were issued: Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1957; the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989 – which has become a sort of a guideline for regulating the relation to children, emphasizing that the right to health is one of the fundamental rights of the child; in 1986 the European Parliament in Strasbourg defined the List of the Rights of the Child in Hospital as a part of the UN Charter on the Rights of the Child. After numerous considerations, the program For a Child’s Smile in Hospital was initiated with the goal to promote and apply humanization of the hospital treatment of children.
In the Republic of Croatia hospital treatment of children is characterized by a more humane approach, with the emphasis on a holistic approach and relieving the feelings of separateness from the family. Accordingly, the hospitalized children are given the opportunity of a continual learning by organizing Children’s Hospital Schools. In the next year, the following hospitals are organizing children’s hospital schools in Zagreb: the Primary school Izidor Kršnjavi in Klaićeva Clinic for Children in Zagreb, the Primary school Ivan Goran Kovačić in the Clinical Hospital Center Šalata and in the Srebrenjak Children Hospital for Respiratory Diseases, the Primary school Jabukovac organizes the Children’s hospital school in the University Hospital Center Rebro, the Primary school Petar Zrinski in the Sisters of Mercy University Hospital Zagreb.
The purpose of the Children’s hospital school is the continuation of education and learning regardless of the duration of the stay in hospital and enabling the easier inclusion into the regular school after the return from the hospital.
