Sažetak
This paper analyses the role of Dujam Balistrilić, canon of the Split chapter and praecentor in the literary oeuvre of Marko Marulić, three of whose celebrated literary works are connected with this person. There is the Latin epistle Francisco Natali Marci Maruli in Valle Surda commorantis responsio, sent to his Split friend from Nečujam on the island of Šolta, where Marulić was enjoying the hospitality of his godfather’s estate. The author supports the assumption that he was working there, and at that time, on the translation of the ethical and ascetic work De imitatione Christi of Thomas à Kempis, the translation of which was dated 20 June 1500. In the dedication on the frontispiece it says that Marko Marulić trans-lated the work “rogatu et impensis” (at the request and at the expense of) Mr Balistilić, praecentor of the church in Split. This then meant that the work was commissioned and paid for. The Naslidovan’je is the most important prose work of Marko Marulić, as Judith is his most important poetic work. It was dedicated to Don Dujam on 22 April 1501, which speaks volumes of the part he played in encouraging and supporting Marulić in his orientation towards works in Croatian. What is more, from the from wording of the prefatory text it can be seen that there was some relationship between the creation of Judith and its first, privileged reader, the learned and well-reputed canon of Split, who was also the poet’s godfather and friend.
