Consistency of descibing serials : benchmarking analysis

Sažetak

Corporate headings have always been the cause of polemics in the library community and differing attitudes of different cataloguing experts and cataloguing rules on behalf of coroporate authorship have been one of the reasons of uneven practice. This paper specifically deals with the problem of corporate authorship in the case of serials. Exceptions to the rules for the selection of headings for serials, as prescribed by Eva Verona, are the cause for different solutions in libraries.
Eva Verona ́s Rule book and manual for making alphabetical catalog: Part. 1st says that the serials should be included in the catalogue under the title proper (anonymous publications), but that the publications that fall under the regulations of corporate authorship are exception to this rule. In Eva Verona ́s Rule book rules on corporate authorship are equally applicable to both serials and monographs, and in the case of serials it is not particularly specified when the corporate body should be considered an author.
The central part of the paper is benchmarking analysis of cataloging practices of three Croatian public libraries that were chosen as representatives of different union catalogs. The research results indicate that the Croatian public libraries do not accept an exception to the rules for describing serials as prescribed by Eva Verona. In other words, in online catalogs of Croatian public libraries main catalog units of almost all serials are included under the title proper as anonymous publications.
Although the Rule book prescribes the use of added entry for corporate author in the cases when a title proper is chosen as a main entry heading, in many examples added etnries are not utilized. Main problem is further complicated by lack of this practice. The paper articulates the advantages of describing serials according to Eva Verona ́s Rule book and points out the potential problems arising from failure to follow the prescribed rules.
