Sažetak

This paper presents an overview of quantitative methods and their application possibilities in selecting materials for new and existing products. Differences in the approach to selecting materials for new and existing products are shown. Quantitative methods are helpful in achieving a higher objectivity level in material selection. The application of quantitative methods in material selection requires the existence and knowledge of numerical data related to materials' properties. Knowing the function, i.e. operative conditions, is essential for weight factors to be assessed realistically for each property. An example of a real product was used for presenting the practical application of the properties' impact method regarding the cylinder (body) and pump screws materials.
