Nazor’s Translations of Beccadelli and Michelangelo’s Sonnets: A Contrastive Analysis

Sažetak
In the article the author starts from the assumption that Lodovico
Beccadelli is a person that played an important role in the Croatian
literature of the 16th and 20th centuries. The introduction briefly retells
the Dubrovnik episode in the archbishop’s life that inspired J. Torbarina
to research him and which also inspired V. Nazor to translate the
archbishop’s sonnets as well as the sonnets of his friend Michelangelo.
The author connects Torbarina’s articles with Nazor’s translations of the
sonnets because Torbarina was the first to seriously deal with Beccadelli
at that time, which is how Nazor became interested in Beccadelli’s
personality. Although Nazor had copied the sonnets from the Slovenian
poet Alojz Gradnik, the author sees the influence of Torbarina’s studies
on Nazor even in his novel Pastir Loda, in which Renaissance villas
are mentioned. The article investigates literary connections to the
1930s and 1940s which resulted in Nazor’s excellent translations of
Beccadelli’s and Michelangelo’s sonnets. The author also analyses the
translations of the sonnets and evaluates them by marking deviations
from the original and by comparing them to other translations of the
same. From this detailed analysis the conclusion is made that Nazor
found the right measure in his deviation from the original and this is
why his translations of these sonnets can be considered exemplary even
today.
