Imaging methods are an important part of the diagnostic algorithm in patients with inflammatory processes in the pelvis. Different radiological methods can be used to depict the urinary, gastrointestinal and genital disorders. The optimal method and scanning protocol should be chosen individually, according to the patient’s clinical condition and laboratory test results. Due to the high availability of equipment, low costs and no ionizing radiation, ultrasound is usually the first-line method of choice. If further radiological evaluation is needed, because of unclear clinical, laboratory or ultrasound findings, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used. ‘Due to its availability and examination speed, CT is an excellent method in cases of urinary or gastrointestinal diseases. In contrast, MRI has a high soft-tissue resolution, which allows better visualization of the ovaries and uterus in women, prostate in men, and perianal diseases. MRI should be used in pregnant women and young patients because of the lack of ionizing radiation.
