Sažetak In recent years, there has been a lot of progress made in the diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis C virus infection. Sensitive and reliable diagnostic tests have been developed, and treatment result can be molecularly monitored. Combined therapy with pegilated interferon alpha and ribavirin has become the gold standard in hepatitis C treatment and has approximately 60% success rate. Protease inhibitors, boceprevir and telaprevir, which have recently been registered in Europe and the United States, have an even higher rate of success in the treatment of patients with HCV genotype 1 when combined with the current standard therapy. The main problem today is that infected patients are difficult to detect. Therefore, it is important to increase the awareness of general population and healthcare professionals about possible risk factors, importance of testing and treatment possibilities.
