Sažetak

Gas appliances used in households, restaurants and other public places are sources of carbon monoxide that may cause poisoning in users and employees. The paper discusses factors that diminish the safety of gas appliances, causing fumes return or excess fumes which potentially lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Furthermore, the statistics of injured persons is supplied.
The examined data was gathered from 82 expert reports on the causes of carbon monoxide poisoning supplied by the Centre for Expert Assessment. The reports show that one third of the persons who suffered carbon monoxide poisoning died. In 50% of all cases the cause of poisoning was a faulty chimney, in 28% poor ventilation was responsible for the poisoning, in 12% the cause was a fault in the gas appliance, and in 10% of all cases the cause was unrelated to the gas appliance or gas installations.
The incidence of carbon monoxide poisoning would greatly drop if adequate chimney repairs were undertaken and if type B gas appliances were replaced with type C.
