Sažetak

The 2010 archaeological excavations at the Virje-Volarski Breg site confirmed the existence of the remains of settlement structures. Among these, three early Middle Ages structures (S-2b) and the remains of a nearby smelting workshop (S-2a) from the same period were found. On the spot where a larger quantity of burned daub, dross and a relatively large number of pottery nozzles was found (S-2a-North), it was concluded that there must have been the workshop’s waste dump. Both positions were documented as early as 2008 on the basis of surface finds and therefore have been greatly endangered by recent agricultural activity.
Apart from the aforementioned finds, pits (S-2a-South) were documented with the remains of iron lumps of various sizes, probably iron ore collected and deposited in nature, as part of layer SU 105. These assumptions need to be checked through detailed interdisciplinary analyses. In addition, radiocarbon (14C) analyses of collected charcoal from structures and artefacts need to be conducted to confirm the earlier dating of the finds, i.e. the period from the end of the 8th to the 9th century during which the smelting workshop and settlement at the Virje-Volarski Breg site were in function.
