Sažetak

Trial excavations of AS 1 Grabrić (Zagreb County) confirmed the existence of a site that needed to be excavated before the construction of the A13 motorway section between Vrbovec 2 Junction and Farkaševac Junction. The site was discovered in 2009, when pottery finds were collected on the surface of the fields south of the village of Grabrić. These were dated to the prehistoric period and Middle Ages (Fig. 1). Grabrić is situated on a long hill, divided by mild dales into a series of smaller areas (Fig. 2). On the south-western side, below a hill, there is a small stream, and another similar one also passes on its northern side.
Trial excavations encompassed the mild southern and south-western hill slopes. Along the margins of the route, longitudinal trial-trenches were dug, 1.50 m wide (Fig. 3). The layer of humus was machine-dug. After this, the fills of the sunken structures, with finds of shards of ceramic vessels, house daub and bricks were defined. In the eastern part of the site, units were found belonging to the infrastructure of a prehistoric settlement, with pottery shards form the Late Bronze Age. In the western part of the site, a rather large number of structure fills was unearthed (Fig. 4), with finds of pottery shards and bricks that can be ascribed to the period of the Middle Ages. Since numerous structure fills were documented in the trial-trenches dug on the margins of the site, the trial-trenches were extended to both sides. Future rescue excavations will also have to include the surfaces on which the construction of a flyover is planned, making the entire surface of future excavations approximately 50,000 m2.
In the trial excavations of AS 1 Grabrić, the existence of an archaeological site was confirmed which, according to the unearthed finds, belongs to the periods of prehistory and the Middle Ages. These rescue excavations will enable the gathering of new facts on the population of the Prigorje region, which to date has been insufficiently excavated.
