Soap Operas, Telenovelas and the Family

Sažetak

The article discusses the concept, origin and development of soap operas and telenovelas. On the basis of research conducted in Croatia and other countries, information is presented about the audiences for such programs and the reasons for their popularity among viewers. The article particularly investigates the kinds of images presented by these series of marriage and the family and whether such images influence the perception of marriage and the family among Croatian viewers. Catholic teachings on marriage and the family, as well as the requirements posed by the Church to the media and their users, especially in the areas of media education and children’s attitudes toward media contents, are examined.
