Sažetak In Croatia the largest silver fir forests are situated in region of Gorski kotar in the area of overgrown high karst which is also the areal’s optimum. The specificity of karst orogrfaphy as the macro- and micro climate have conditioned that on this relatively small area one can find significant diversity of habitats, climate, flora and fauna. Silver fir could be found here at different expositions, at the altitude between
< 500 – >1200 m. Although largest complexes of silver-forests appear on limestone, they could be also found on limestone – dolomite, dolomite and silicate substrate. Different geological
substrates have formed more than a dozen of different soil-types which differ according to the physical-chemical-biological characteristics. Silver fir could be found in mixed (rarely pure) stands with beech, Norway spruce, great maple and elm where it appears in 11 ecological-managerial forest types (EMFT): I-B-11, I-B-30, I-C-10, I-C-11, I-C-12, I-C-20, I-C-30, I-C-40, I-C-50, I-C-60, I-C-61. Fir phenotype significantly differs in different ecological managerial forest types what can be recognized from particular measuring parameters such as tree height, crown width and length etc. When all the orographical, altitude-related, geological, pedological, hytocoenological and biological-silvicultural differences of silver fir forest are taken into account – it is obvious than that the present specific distribution of silver fir seed units in Gorski Kotar neglects its
biodiversity, and it needs to be reconsidered and revised.
