Milk and dairy products in daily diet of children and adolescents according to age and sex

Sažetak

The aim of this study was to determined the portion of milk and dairy products in average daily diet of children age 8-9 years and adolescents 15-18 years in New Zagreb area, according to age and sex. FFQ method for mass and frequency as well as energy and nutritional components of dairy products intake was used. With regard to specific subject groups a portion of carbonated beverages intakes, as a substitute for milk, was also investigated. Results showed that milk and dairy products are well balanced in whole group of children and adolescent's boys but not in adolescent girls daily diet, while portion of carbonated beverages consumed is negligible. Tendency of increased carbonated beverage consumption of adolescents was noticed. High protein intake, from milk and dairy products consumed, was observed. In terms of food types, higher fat content dairy products were consumed. Average intake of calcium is adequate according to sex and age, while less calcium intake was observed in adolescents in comparation to children. Differences in food stuffs consumption between children with regard to sex was not noticed, while this was not the case between the adolescents. Children, also, consumed more cheese than adolescents, and men consumed more fermented products and cheese than women.
