Sažetak

The Council of Ministers of the European Union in its Resolution defined career guidance as a set of activities that enables individuals to identify their capabilities, competencies and interests at different times of life in order to make decisions about education, training, and to be able to manage their professional career. Most of the activities related to the institutionalized and organized professional orientation in Croatia are connected to public service employment (Croatian Employment Office). This paper addresses the problem of career guidance in terms of the roles and responsibilities of school, which, together with family, has a long term influence on the career guidance for young people. The paper presents a historical overview of career guidance in Croatia and a review of theories and factors of career guidance. Especially distinguished is school as a factor in career guidance and the impact and influence of school on career guidance for young people are discussed here. Modern society requires an individual who is capable of making independent decisions about her/his professional development in different periods of life. Researches on students in elementary and secondary schools show that students are significantly under-prepared for making professional decisions when expected of them. For that reason, we suggest the need for career guidance as an implicit activity of the entire educational process.
