The restauration of Venus with erotes

Sažetak
The antique marble figurine of a naked Venus sitting
and dressing up, accompanied by two Erotes was found at
the archaelogical site of Mursa near Osijek and it is in the
holdings of the Museum of Slavonia in Osijek.
It is approximately 30 cm high and it was broken on
several occasions (11 fragments), with a heavily dripstoned
surface. The marble broke into small pieces (salt crystallization)
and was partially dark-coloured (brown, black and
grey stains). Unfortunately during excavations not all figurine
fragments were found.
The archaeologists shared views that the figurine
could have been painted and its fragments have therefore
been analysed at the Jožef Štefan Institute (Dr. Žiga Šmit)
with a proton ray in the air by energy 2 MeV. Only iron
and strontium were found in all analysed points of specific
fragments and they are admixture of a basic limestone. By
measuring we have not managed to find traces of painted
mineral pigments.
Dr. Bojan Đurić and Harald W. Mueller have carried
out the analysis of stable isotopes 13C and 18O and geochemical
analysis of successional elements (N, Mg, Al, K,
Sc, V, Cr, Fe, Mn, Co, Zn, Rb, Sr, Y, Cd, Ba, La, Ce, Eu, Hf,
Th, U) in a stone sample and established the marble originated
from Carrara in Italy, which confirms a rich trade in
marble in ancient times.
The light dirt layers on its surface have been rinsed
by various solvents (water, acetone, ethanol) and non-ion
wash-up detergent with bristle brushes. The surface has
been well rinsed at the same time with non-mineralized
water. The more unbending layers have been removed by
small dry pointed ultrasonic hammers and afterwards by
small ultrasonic hammers used for water rinsing. After rinsing
the fragments have been polished by polishing sponges
because the surface of some spots previously covered with
layers was rough and the surrounding stone area highly polished.
For the sake of wet cleansing procedures, before fixing
the fragments have been dried in vacuum dryer. Crumbled
fragments, fissures and sensitive corners have been
fixed and particular fragments stuck together by a mixture
of double-component epoxide fixer, calcite and silica flour
and fine-ground marble. The fragments have been stuck together
only at the contact points but larger particular fragments
have been reinforced by a brass wire. The fissures,
especially stuck joints, have been additionally puttied and
the surface has been toned in basic marble colour.
Torso of the second Erotes could not be positioned and
completed in the statuette since there was no foothold and
the Venus statuette showed visible traces of feet and both
palms of Erotes, which means that the position could be
calculated and Erotes could be positioned in the figurine.
Laser scanning of the statuette and digital reconstruction
i.e. 3D modelling (Corpus studio d.o.o., Rok Hafner) has
been used. After having done the digital reconstruction it
was possible to position Erotes to Venus. Erotes has been
fixed to the statuette on a steel holder connecting the right
foot of Erotes and the right remainder of the missing femur
of Erotes torso.
Venus figurine with Erotes will be exhibited in the
Museum of Slavonia in Osijek. Visitors will have the opportunity
to see not only the original figurine but also its
computer reconstruction.
