Timber Structures in Castles of Continental Croatia Part II

Sažetak
In the Middle Ages timber was a widely used material not only for roof structures but also for the construction of other buildings, castles etc. It was easily available and applicable, statically convenient and easily workable. Timber is not a durable material as it can be easily destroyed in fires and wars. Not many timber structures have survived since they were frequently replaced by modern masonry structures. This paper focuses on the historical period up to the mid 16th century although the fundamental elements of medieval architecture continue into the 17th century. The paper presents, as far as the remains have made possible, the use of timber in the construction of the foundations, ceilings, tie beams and lintels, partition walls, cantilevered galleries, timber staircases and bridges. The examples described here are primarily Croatian ones together with just few of their central European counterparts.
