Antihistamines - Aplication in Dental Medicine and Possible Undesirable Effects

Sažetak
In his practice the dentist comes across allergic reactions which can be detected in the oral cavity and orofacial region. In order to treat these reactions, as in the case of anaphylactic shock, the dentist applies antagonist H} receptor. Some antagonist H1 receptor can be
applied by the dentist because o f their sedative, antiemetic and of local anaesthetic effect. They are also used for reducing the secretion
o f saliva. During application o f antagonist H1 receptors with marked sedative effects the dentist must warn his patient of the possibility of reduced psychophysical ability. The dentist should keep in mind the fact that simultaneous application o f other depressors of the central nervous system leads to marked sedation. Antihistamines may interact with many other medications, which can also cause undesirable reactions. On the other hand, some undesirable effects which occur during longterm application of H} antagonists, can be seen in the oral cavity. Thus, such patients may ask for the dentist’s help because of xerostomia. Knowledge o f the characteristics o f this group o f medications enables the dentist to utilize their therapeutic value and prevent the possibility o f undesirable effects.
