The Comparison of Methods of Approximate Orientation of Plaster Casts within the Articulator System

The present study was focused to establish photogrammetrically, on statistically significant number of male and female patients, any differences between the two mounting methods. The sample included 63 patients. Impressions of both the upper and the lower jaw were made, and the casts then mounted in a ARTEX Type 519 articulator system, first by using the standard face- bow. Three points on each lower jaw plaster cast were marked, photographed in the articulator and processed photogrammetrically. The same lower jaw plaster casts were then mounted in the articulator by using the standard Bonwill’s triangle method, photographed and processed photogrammetrically. Differentpositions methods of the same plaster cast within the photogrammetric determination of the coordinates of point marked on the plaster cast, correlated with fixed articulator points, produced different positions of the points depending on whether one or the other method was used. The results of this study suggested significant differences between the two standard methods of plaster casts orientation. As compared with the standard BonwilVs triangle method, whereby plaster casts are orientated only approximately within the articulator space, by using the standard face-bow method the plaster casts are orientated according to the mechanical axis on the articulator just as the upper jaw is orientated according to terminal hinge axis of the patient. Therefore, the standard orientation method with the standard face-bow is recommended for everyday use with the proper indication.
