Sažetak

A comparative clinical investigation was carried out in 45 patients
o f both sexes with oral recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU). The
following clinical parameters were examined: the size and number o f aphthous lesions, intensity of inflammation and frequency of recurrences in the same patients with RAU, prior to and during the war in Croatia. The aim o f the investigation was to demonstrate the effect of stress on RAU. Significant differences were found in the number o f efflorescent aphthae prior to the war, amounting to on average 3.09 +/- 3.11 and during the war 4.23 +/- 3.16, intensity o f inflammation, which amounted to on average 2.36 +/- 0.72 before the war and 2.68 +/- 0.56 during the war. During the war the size of the aphthae in subjects showed an increase, amounting to on average 5.32 +/- 4.60 in relation to the size o f RAU before the war, 4.93 +/- 4.62. Before the war aphthae recurrences in subjects were on average 59.98 +/- 72.54 days and were significantly more frequent during the war 17.20 +/- 14.09 days. During the war small aphthous ulcers were predominant, MiRAU, in 69% of the examined cases. In our subjects large and herpetiform aphthae rarely occurred during the war. The stress situations induced by the war conditions had an effect
on increased frequency and intensity of aphthae in the examined group.
